Have 2 rabbits,male & female

and they are 20 weeks.

I think she may be pregnant but dont know,

is there any signs to look for?

Ive felt her belly but havent a clue.

They are shreading their newspaper but dont know if thats nesting or boredom, also fur is coming out everywhere but that may just becasue its getting to spring??

Ive seperated them anyway but I cant get to the vets. Dh works till 6 - they close at 6 and no weekend clinic except emergencies.

And i dont drive and cant haul 2 kids and a rabbit there.

Does anyone know how much extra it would be if they did home visits?

Thanks

No idea I'm afraid! Why don't you phone the vets for some advice though?

moonmother · 14/02/2008 14:49

Sounds like you have baby bunnies on the way. She's probably nesting.

I wouldn't bother taking her to the vets, they'd charge you loads just to tell you she's expecting.

You did the best thing seperating them.Just let her stay quiet and wait and give her some fresh veg every day as well as her normal food.

Heres got some good info

let us know how it goes

I made an appointment on Tuesday but couldn't make it as DH didnt get home early enough.

I know they will just say bring her in to check (which I cant) so I was hoping to find out how much it usually costs to have a home visit, I dont want to ring incase its very expensive and I cant afford it1 Then I will feel awful telling them I cant do it.

Thankyou moon mother.

Would you really not bother with the vets?

How long are they pregnant for?

Thats the thing... I have no idea when she might have them!!

I feel very anxious!

Just press 141 to withhold your number, then phone up and ask how much home visits cost.

My rabbit shreds newspaper and has been losing a lot of fur lately, so your bunny may not be preggers. Best to keep them seperate till you know one way or the other.

foofi · 14/02/2008 14:53

Out of curiosity, why did you get one of each?

Disenchanted · 14/02/2008 14:54

Foofi,

We were told to by the breeder!

She said 'get one spayed at 6 months, but dont worry they wont breed before then, they wont be mature enough'

Which isnt true

average gestation for rabbits is 31 days .

Is she friendly and does she sit still?

With mine I used to carefully pick them up and sit with them on my lap for a little while, with my hands under they're tunmmy.

When the pups get big enough you can actually feel them moving around in there...its very odd but quite nice too.

I used to breed and show Rabbits and Guinea Pigs as a teenager....just in case anyone thought I was a weirdo

Disenchanted · 14/02/2008 15:05

Lol,

no she wont be touched,

but shes always been like that!

Vets should not be aggro for you calling and asking prices for a house call at all. Seriously though if your vet is only open those hours why choose them. Plenty of vets do open later and at least part of the weekend too. I'd look for a practice that suits your needs better.

That said I doubt the vets are going to be that keen to come out to the house to check a rabbit for pregnancy. The days are pretty busy in the average practice and house calls are usually reserved for cases where a pet is needing to be put to sleep or the owners are disabled and the pet needs to be seen urgently and no other option is possible. It would probably be cheaper to get a taxi and get yourself and kids there than to get the vet out.
As previous posters have said though the best thing is probably to watch and wait. Rabbits can be pretty stressy about their babies so the less interference the better really. Does your rabbit use a litter tray in the hutch? - if so that will make it a whole heap easier if she does have kits. If you haven't tried it, its is worth doing before they arrive so she gets used to it. Once the kits are here the less you disturb her the better.

assdoc · 14/02/2008 22:50

Look at it this way..........

If she's pregnanat you have done the right thing in separating them and in a short while she'll have a litter. She'll do all the hard work and you rehome the babies and spay her.

If she's not pregnant she soon will be if you leave them together so they need separating now anyway. Get Mr bun neutered now. If in a month you dont have babies get mrs bun neutered too. Problem solved.

I don't see any advantage in spending a small fortune on a home visit or taxi to and from the vets as pregnancy can be very hard to detect in rabbits and they may well just tell you to wait and see anyway.

Thanks for the advice,

Im going to keep them seperated until I have him spayed anyway of course, I wouldn't want to be in this situation again.

Im going to try and feel her tummy again but I dont hold much hope in detecting anything!!
