Should I ask for money?

Hello,

I agreed to look after for a small dog for 8days - Saturday to Saturday.

I'm already regretting it. When the owners made the request, via 'borrow my doggy', to look after the dog they said they would be 'happy to pay for my troubles'

My sister agreed to look after the dog last minute a few weeks ago- owners flights were delayed and the ended up with the dog even longer. I've just found out that they never paid her but instead said '' oh do you want anything for it..''- and my sister is too polite to say anything.

So I'm wondering, how do I ask for money at this stage and what should I reply to ''do you want anything for it..''

Obviously I won't be agreeing to this again and bear responsibility for not having this agreed in advance.

This thread is very confusing.

[annoyed]

I should have been more clear. To say the dog has been looked after on a previous occasion (at last minute) and this is a new week of looking after him.
No need to get annoyed - either don't reply or ask for clarification

this may not be the type of thing borrow my doggy is designed to cover, but you are the person who agreed to take the dog for a week. That the dog isn’t instantly slotting into your life shouldn’t be that shocking. This is a lesson learned.

@Jellyx I had asked if you had the dog at home but you'd posted the dog was at your home before I saw it

Ok - thanks for explaining

This is crazy! I've just paid a dog boarder to have my pooch for 8 nights - £250! Who knew you could get this service for free?! Grin

It a few things bothering me

  • the owner not paying as agreed
  • the owner not being clear about the dogs needs
-the owner not bothering to check in

I have previously looked after dog

I know! It's saving them a lot of money (especially in Edinburgh) and they don't even get my sister a bar of choc to say thanks

My sister looked after the dog in February. Prior to this I'd agreed to look after the dog in Easter.

Yes- agreed I should have confirmed price before. Usually id be happy to do it for free but they weren't forthcoming about how needy/noisy he is- so now I want compensated for sure as this is not an enjoyable experience.

If you are charging for a free service then you could be reported. I doubt the site will be happy, but running a boarding business has legal implications. If you don't like the dog, or can't cater for its needs, or don't like the owners, then don't take the dog at all. But don't change the terms, because it isn't "compensation", it's a few for a service.

Jellyx · 08/04/2023 20:48

I'm not charging for a professional service. The owners offered money as it's 'over and above' the usual expected from the site.

I will decline to do anything for these owners again.

The issue atm is they offered money and looks like they'll say ''do you want anything' at the end of next week. So, I'm not sure how to reply or what to charge.

I would have declined to take the dog if the owner had been honest about his needs and had I know the owner was going to be the kind not to check in on the dog or offer a small gift of thanks like a polite human!

If you didn’t agree on a price, I would take “do you want anything” to be an offer to cover your actual expenses incurred during the week.

On thanks for your view.
I've already decided I won't communicate with them. Just surprising they wouldn't spend a £1 on a chocolate to say thanks.
