would you notice two deep puncture wounds on a cocker's chest?

have been accused of ridiculous thing

had a cocker spaniel for the day on Saturday, about a month younger than my springer (so 9 months ish) and they played really happily together, had a nice run off the lead and then we scrubbed the cocker up a bit (he was thick with mud) and took him home and everyone was happy

but this morning his owner was hysterical about a severe dog bite she found on his chest, said he needed an operation and was badly bruised and so on - it was impossible to get enough information about the injuries from her to work out whether it could have happened on Saturday or not. cannot imagine that neither me, my children nor my friend failed to notice something so severe especially on the area we paid lots of attention to cleaning - the fluffy bit on his chest

also don't understand why she only noticed it today, 36 hours later, and took to vet then instead of, well as soon as she took his harness off when I took him back?

apparently he has had an operation today to remove dead tissue, drain some fluid and have it sewn up again. really need a vet to come on here and give some idea as to whether you can 'time' the likelihood of when this injury might have been sustained?

thank god am insured anyway but @ whole thing

sounds bizarre

is he very fluffy?

WEhat colour is he? Surely you'd have noticed blood on a light coloured dog and if it's that bad I would have thought he'd been sensitive about it. Sounds very strange.

sullysmum · 11/02/2008 16:05

Sounds like it happened at another time to me and you are getting the blame.

puffylovett · 11/02/2008 16:14

yes sounds like it wasn't you, surely he would've flinched while you were cleaning the area up ? i know my spaniel would've, but there again she's a wimp.

she has a white chest, and there's no way you could miss a bite - the blood would show in her fur.

i'm sure that if you spend the day with them both, ytou would've noticed if your springer had bitten the cocker - it sounds like if its that deep it would've had to have been quite a vicous bite ? or am i talking rubbish !!!

dead flesh - before saturday then I assume

and it may have been tender for him but you may not have noticed wheh hosing him down - my springer has a high pain threshold I assume as often lumps /cuts are only pointed out to me after the groomers and I've washed him thorougly before without noticing a one inch lump

Its not your fault - and I hope the owner has pet insurance - it really could have happened much earlier

ahh thank you all, what was most annoying was the assumption that I'd know about an injury and not tell them/take dog to vet or whatever but try to 'cover it up'. what on earth for?

well it transpires that the 'severe bite wound on chest' is actually in his 'armpit', almost definitely much older than Saturday and probably not somewhere I'd have gone with the cloth, towel or brush (I only do the bits that show ) he's predominantly white too (black and white), all white around the chest, tummy area and quite a thin coat from being over stripped at the groomer every 5 minutes

mr cocker spaniel a much more reasonable and sensible person than mrs and he has been round to explain things more fully, it sounds like it could have been a sharp twig or similar - all the hedges have been cut back recently, I think he got caught on something when leaping in and out, doing his spaniely thing

one of the punctures is 8mm across which sounds big for either a twig or a tooth? kind of a weird place for a dog to bite too.
