If your cat was outside and you shouted it in...

Would it run home?

Obviously it depends on whether it's hungry or just ignoring you but on average?

Nope. One of my cats won't come in even if he's sat there crying at the door wanting to come in. He just saunters off if I have the audacity to open the door. If I go out to put something in the bin however, he'll dart in and trip me up.

🤣🤣 this sounds like ours. Girl cat. Sits outside the door meowing. She's terribly unsociable so us opening the door is too close for comfort.

So open the door....then walk into a different room. Wait a few min get freezing while door is open she ponders for a while, realises there's no one within 3 metres and usually (but not always) decides to come in

lljkk · 28/02/2023 13:22

We have a special cat call.
Whether it works depends how hungry they are !

ilovesooty · 28/02/2023 17:51

In fact mine usually come running to

Their names

Dreamies

Teatime

Mum's home

😁

yepmelady · 28/02/2023 17:53

At the shake of the dreamies pot he will appear. But in all honesty in winter he barely gos out and is always on the doorstep if he is out

Anawilliam850 · 01/03/2023 13:10

It's hard to say for sure because it depends on the cat's personality, training, and the environment it's in. Some cats may come running immediately when called, while others may be more independent and take their time. Additionally, if the cat is easily distracted by something else outside, such as a bird or another cat, it may not come inside right away.
However, in general, cats are creatures of habit and tend to follow routines. If you establish a routine where you call your cat inside at the same time every day, it may eventually start to associate that time with coming inside and be more likely to respond to your call. It's also a good idea to reward your cat when it does come inside, either with treats or affection, to reinforce the behavior.

WetBandits · 01/03/2023 15:14

One does, silently. Another will shout the whole way back from wherever she is so I know she’s on her way and the third is too thick to go outside so she stays indoors.

OhNoNotThatAgain · 01/03/2023 15:58

Mostly they do. Although one of ours hangs around by the front door instead of coming round the back, and has trained the NDN to ring our doorbell for him...
Grin

inloveandmarried · 01/03/2023 16:41

Yes mine do. But bare in mind they have extraordinary hearing and can be up to 3 miles away. They sometimes take a while and arrive huffing and puffing.

We back into a wood and this is usually what happens.

That's interesting - our cat never used to come in but after a few nights of us locking cat flap it was like he was waiting and knew it was hometime. Sure the dreamies when he came in helped with building the routine.

AnnaMagnani · 01/03/2023 21:27

Sometimes our boy settles somewhere else in the village.

If we go and get him, he'll walk all the way home with us.

It does get comments about taking cats for a walk though.

EloiseJ · 05/03/2023 07:33

It's difficult to say for sure whether a cat would come running home if called from outside, as it can depend on a number of factors such as the cat's personality, level of training, and motivation at the time.

Some cats are highly motivated by food and will come running when called if they know they'll be fed. Others may be more independent and less responsive to their owner's calls, especially if they're distracted by something else, like hunting or exploring.

Training your cat to come when called can increase the likelihood that they'll come running home when called. You can start by using a specific sound or word to call your cat, and then rewarding them with a treat or affection when they come to you.

With repetition and consistency, your cat may start to associate the sound or word with positive reinforcement and be more likely to come when called.

Ultimately, it's important to be cautious and mindful when allowing your cat to roam outside, and to make sure they have identification tags and a microchip in case they do get lost.

Mine comes home when she wants and sits on the window sill crying to come in.

We have somehow developed a thing where if she sits on the window sill inside and makes her 'Waaa' noise I ask her if she wants to go out, if she walks in a circle I let her out.

This is because she likes to sit with the window open with her bum warm and her nose cold.

Usernamesarenoteasy · 05/03/2023 08:52

No, never. Not one of them. Although one of mine is a fat lazy lump who has refused to the leave the house for a couple of years.
The other two come and go as they please, and totally ignore me unless demanding affection or food!

MyBloodyMaryneedsmoreTabasco · 05/03/2023 08:58

One won't unless it pleases her to do so. The other, always, even if he doesn't want to. I tell him it's because he's such a good boy but secretly I just think he's not very bright.

SkankingWombat · 28/02/2023 12:39

Just her name? Sometimes. Maybe 1 in 10 times?
Her name plus 'din dins'? 95% of the time.

Yes I meant by name only. Sorry I didn't notice I hadn't written that.

louise5754 · 06/03/2023 07:05

I've noticed many posters have 2/3 cats. I wanted another but I've read they prefer to live alone. Although growing up we had 2 cats and a dog but the 2nd wasn't by choice.

Roystonv · 06/03/2023 08:15

I feed them in a bowl so chinking a fork against this means food so take bowl (any bowl) outside and chink and usually get some response but rarely use it except vet visit say and I have not got them inside in time

Roystonv · 06/03/2023 08:16

Sorry just read your post re name only too

MargeIsBack · 06/03/2023 08:20

My male cat will 100% always respond to his name and come home if he can hear you and be very chuffed you want him. My female cat - his sister - doesn’t go as far as him anyway (only to immediate neighbours) but will come to the garden to see what you want and will then assess whether it’s worth her while coming to you. She is highly suspicious of motive if you call her. I think she is probably a lot brighter than her brother.

BrimFullOfAsher · 06/03/2023 08:47

Hit and miss. And sometimes, he'll come to you but won't come inside. He'll just sit meowing

JL642 · 06/03/2023 09:40

I am enjoying these stories of everyone’s cats. They’re such funny, sassy creatures.

JamSandle · 06/03/2023 09:42

Yes.

lalaloopyhead · 06/03/2023 09:55

We have 2 cats, and yes mostly they do - god knows what the neighbours think as its usually a high pitched 'home time kitty kits!' Though boy is more responsive than the girl. Interesting they repsond to me more than DH - though he is too embarrased to call them in the right way.

Neither go much further than the garden that backs onto ours and they don't tend to stay out for long anyway, espeically in the cold weather and never after dark. Its more common for them to be sat outside the patio doors glaring at us to be let in.

catherinewales · 06/03/2023 10:08

My cat would but only on his terms. If he's having the time of his life, even shaking his treats wouldn't get him in 😂
