Vet thinks it’s time

I’ve got a dog who is seven and for the last three years has had severe skin issues.
This week I took her to the vets as she was vomiting alot. They did X-rays and she’s got severe pneumonia, and they also discovered issues with her back.
The vet advised me to take her home so the family could say goodbye, and to bring her back on Monday and we’ll see how we go.
Shes much improved over the weekend, but the vet said her skin is the worst they’ve ever treated on a dog, and now with the new information about her spine, I know it’s the right time. It is just so hard as she’s currently barking at the neighbours dog and seems ok. Any advice on what to do?

I don't think the vet would tell you it's time if it were not true. Give your dog a wonderful weekend, favourite food and walks and lots of affection. Take dog back for vet to access on Monday. Tell vet dog has seemed better and follow advice vet gives.

7 is no age, unless she is a huge breed. Did they provide meds for the pneumonia? What has been done for her skin, diagnosis, elimination diet in case it’s food allergies, etc.? As for her spine, is she in pain? If so, are pain meds an option? You may want a second opinion if none of the above has been done/addressed by this vet .

We had our dog put to sleep last year. If the vet has said it’s time, it is. We had a weekend with her and the family all said good bye. We stayed with her and stroked her as she went to sleep. It’s very sad indeed but you owe it to your dog too the right thing.

I’m so sorry you are faced with this, it’s awful. 🐶🐾💐

She’s a French Bulldog.
she’s been on anti fungal tablets, which will eventually cause issues with her liver. She’s had that many antibiotics that they keep having to change what they give her.
We’ve only just found out about the back, and her legs are dropping. The vet said her spine is a mess.
We got to the vets at least one once a month for issues.
yes she’s got meds for pneumonia, and we nearly lost her last year when she had it.
its just so hard and so sad, we’re all going to miss her so much.

I had my beloved dog put to sleep last week. When I was talking to the vet beforehand, she said " you have to remember that it's not about you now , it's about her ". Which I needed at that time - like you I was struggling with the decision and grieving ahead of time, but my dear old girl needed me to be strong and to do the right thing for her. That's what you have to do now - put your own feelings aside and think of her . Sending a hand hold, I know it's hard.

Please listen to your vet. Put the animal before yourself. It's cruel to let her suffer. Imagine your skin being like his and how that would and must feel. Do the right thing.

Lauraa7 · 26/02/2023 07:43

Yes the skin issue alone is a nightmare, and adding everything else too, I know I’m
doing the right thing by her. I’m just so sad

I think it's time people stop buying these dogs now. If people don't buy them they won't be bred. It's just cruel

Not the right thread to post something so insensitive.

It’s done, she’s gone. Thank you for all the kind comments, apart from Gettingalofttothestation!
Im already missing her but know I did the right thing by her!

I am sorry to hear this news, but like others are saying if the Vet is telling you this then its their professional opinion and it may be the best decision for your dog. I hope all is well with your family during this time.

I'm sorry to hear about your dog's health issues. It's never easy to make the decision to say goodbye to a beloved pet, but it's important to keep their quality of life in mind.

Based on what you've shared, it sounds like your dog may be experiencing a lot of discomfort and pain due to her skin and spinal issues. While she may seem okay in certain moments, it's important to consider her overall well-being and the long-term prognosis.

One helpful tool in making this decision could be creating a list of your dog's good and bad days. This can help you see patterns and trends in her health and behavior. You could also consider discussing her prognosis and options with your vet to get a better understanding of what lies ahead.

It's important to remember that it's okay to feel a range of emotions during this time. Grief and sadness are normal, and it's important to give yourself time to process your feelings.

You could consider talking to a trusted friend or family member, or even a professional counselor or support group, to help you through this difficult time.

Ultimately, the decision to say goodbye to your dog is a personal one, and only you and your family can make that choice. Just know that you've given your dog a wonderful life and that she will always be a part of your heart and memories.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's never easy to say goodbye to a beloved pet, but you made a compassionate and difficult decision to end her suffering. It's natural to feel a range of emotions during this time, and it's important to allow yourself time to grieve and process your feelings.

Remember that you gave your dog a loving home and a wonderful life, and that she will always hold a special place in your heart. Please don't hesitate to reach out for support if you need it during this difficult time.

I'm sorry to hear about your dog's health issues. It's never an easy decision to make when it comes to euthanizing a pet, but it sounds like your dog is suffering and it may be time to consider it. It's important to discuss this with your vet and have a frank conversation about your dog's quality of life, as well as any treatment options that may be available.
It may be helpful to make a list of your dog's symptoms and behaviors that you've noticed, and to discuss this with your vet. This will give you a better idea of your dog's condition and what options are available. You may also want to consider speaking with a veterinary specialist, such as a dermatologist or orthopedic surgeon, to get their expert opinion.
Ultimately, the decision to euthanize your pet is a personal one and should be made based on what is best for your dog's well-being and quality of life. It's important to take the time to consider all options and to make the decision that feels right for you and your family.
