WARNING - sad story, but wanted to warn dog owners who 'play ball' with their dogs....

At work on Wednesday, we had an emergency where a lady had thrown a ball for her German Shepherd, he'd caught it in his mouth but it got stuck at the entrance to his throat. Well by the time she got to us, he had died . He was only 1. I tried to get the ball out in the car park, but it was solid. When we finally removed it (too late for the dog unfortunately), it was a really rock solid, hard ball, nothing was going to budge it. I've seen 2 of these in the past year. Just wanted to say to people, not saying don't play ball with your dog, obviously it's huge fun for everyone, but consider getting one of those balls attached to a rope, or use a tennis ball or something that can be punctured quickly if needs be. I couldn't bear for this to happen to anybody else. Apologies if i've upset anyone, but this has been on my mind since Weds, is a horrible thing obviously, for any one/dog to go through

I told a client the same thing today when she was proudly telling me how her dog is ball mad. Ensure the ball is too big to be swallowed &/or that it has a hole through the middle. I have thankfully managed to save a dog that was (just) alive on presentation but only because she could shift minimal air through it for the short term.

God thats awful, the poor dog, not a very nice way to die, and so young as well my dogs have the soft squeaky sort and a large football that they don't have much chance of swallowing since it's nearly as big as my little dog!

My younger dog is ball mad and will chase and chase and chase. Her favourite ball is a solid rubber one, but it is a squidgy one, so I do feel that, if she got it stuck, I could squeeze it to move it. I don't think she likes harder balls as she very often refuses to retrieve the more solid ones.

I have heard a similar story from my mum's cousin - his German Shepherd suffered the same fate and he never got over it.

I have a collie cross Greyhound but he is quite big and even a tennis ball could be fatal. I'm quite aware of this and really glad you bought it up in a thread as others may not be.

We throw any too small balls away including 'power balls' which my DSs love but understand why they have to go!"
