Best urinary cat food?

My cat had a urinary infection recently and I'm trying to prevent it from coming back, so I thought I'd start her on a dry urinary cat food but I don't know which cat food would be best? Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you

Tbh I'd go to wet, we were told to by our vet after our cat nearly died from a really bad UTI. He's been fine since.

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor I'm so sorry to hear your cat was seriously ill due to UTI. I'm glad he's better now. What wet food do you feed him on? I can't seem to a find a wet food that my cat likes that much, so have been using dry food as well but if I could get her to eat the wet food only, that would be much better. Many thanks

I used to use Ava dry cat food which I specifically chose because it was good for both urinary tract and hairballs, both we had problems with. Unfortunately it was recalled with no alternative but I went with James Wellbeloved hairball food as its supposed to be good for immune system all round as well. We've not had any infections since, touch wood.
Also give ours a simple wet food of chicken breast in jelly, very little nutrition but it makes sure she's getting some fluids in, and makes her happy 🐱

This is what he's been on since. I also give him Cystaid capsules daily broken up in a Lick e lix.

You have to take the dry food away completely as the smell is so strong they'll always go for that over the wet given the choice .

You could add water to the dry food too so it makes it soft and a gravy if all else fails.

We use Purina urinary food - it's about £30 for 5kg. Half the price of Royal Canin and seems to work just as well.

My cat also takes cystease tablets and D-Mannose supplements.

Theunamedcat · 11/02/2023 07:59

Can someone explain the d mannose supplements? Are they a tablet what's the dose?

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 11/02/2023 09:27

They're a tablet but you can get powder too.

The dose depends on the size of the cat and tablet - mine has two tablets a day and he's about 5kg.

One of our cats used to get urinary tract infections and they were on purina urinary dry food. The vet told us it was the worse thing for urinary problems and advised we move to wet food straight away, preferably gravy, and to add a small amount of water to it at every meal. Never had one urinary infection after that and far cheaper!!

Mine won't touch any of the urinary brand wet foods. We've tried them all and I just ended up with a very expensive cupboard of unused food Grin our local cat sanctuary loved me!

We spoke to our vet and he said any wet food is better than none - so he gets Purina Urinary Dry and then Felix wet as he won't touch anything else we give him 🤷🏻‍♀️

He has struvite crystals so the urinary food he gets is formulated especially to break those down.

When it comes to selecting a dry urinary cat food, it's important to look for a product that has been specifically formulated to support urinary tract health.

These foods typically have a lower level of magnesium and a controlled pH level to help prevent the formation of urinary crystals and stones.

Some popular brands of dry urinary cat food include Hill's Science Diet Urinary and Hairball Control, Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Urinary SO, and Purina Pro Plan Focus Urinary Tract Health.

Many pet parents ask this questions can i give my cat Cranberries for uti?

It's always a good idea to consult with your veterinarian before making any dietary changes for your cat, as they can provide guidance on which specific product and feeding regimen may be best for your cat's individual needs.

I think its best to say that if you're ever unsure about what food to choose for your cat's urinary health, don't hesitate to ask a vet for advice.

You can easily ask a vet online and get professional guidance on what food options are best for your cat's unique needs. As a fellow cat mom, I know that their health is paramount. Getting advice from a professional can give you peace of mind and help ensure that your cat is getting the best care possible.

I hope this advice helps you find the right food for your cat and improves their urinary health.
