I am in the north west, I have a black lab. Would anybody like her?

I really think I need to re home my dog. She is 10 years old, so quite an old lady, and I think we are making her life a misery. She doesn't get a regular walk, gets no peace and quiet and DS2, 19 months is starting to torment her something rotten.

I don't know how to go about finding her a new home. I want her to be loved. Can anybody help?

I never understood anyone wanting to rehome a pet until I had my own. Sorry it has come to this.

sullysmum · 04/02/2008 23:03

What about contacting lab rescue?

BethAndHerBrood · 04/02/2008 23:05

I've looked on some websites, and there's tons of info about getting a dog, but none about what to do if you are trying to rehome one.

Just a slight odd story to throw in.

Background- all through my childhood we had a beautiful Golden Labrador called Goldie- she became unwell and died when I was 17- we were all devastated ( had her since I was 5- so a much loved family pet)
anyway-

Not long after she died I was at work one day ( I worked for BT Directory Enquiries) and hyad a call off a woman who lived locally looking for a lab rescue centre as her black labrador dog had not settled in with the family. I couldnt find a number for a local Lab recuse centre, but took her number and begged my dad to go and see the dog, knowing that he would fall inlove and bring her home.

He did- he contacted the woman that weekend and brought 'molly' home with him- this was 12 years ago- he still has her now, she is very old and probably doesnt have many years left, but I often wondered what would have happened had I not have taken that call that day.

sullysmum · 05/02/2008 21:24

Lovely story!

justwaterformethanks · 12/02/2008 20:16

Is there no way you can keep her at all ? She probably only has another 5 years to go ,is there no-one you could ask to walk her for you? dont let your 19month old torment her ,be firm with him ,he will learn quickly to leave her alone if you are tough with him ,this will help if in the future you deciude to get another dog. If you honestly cant cope ,get in touch with lab rescue ,expect a long wait though ,because most people want a younger dog , if you really struggle I will take her , have a dog already and have 20 years of labrador experience and dog friendly children ( they share their food!!) email me at [email protected] . Where are you in the north west ?

justwaterformethanks · 12/02/2008 20:29

We are in north yorkshire and are 5 minutes drive from the the BEST dog walk ever ,away from roads ,a river ,lots of rabbit, deer, duck smells and tons of friendly dogs of the same persuasion ,serious doggy heaven !!! Oh and we dont do dog beds here we do sofas and rich tea biscuits for supper ( only a couple though ,we dont want to get podgy !) I only work 2 days a week and have a very good experienced dog walker for the days im working .

Wisteria · 12/02/2008 20:33

Beth why doesn't she get a regular walk? At 10, she doesn't need miles - can't ds2 come with you?

She will be distraught at leaving you if you've had her for 10 yrs....

I am about this.

All you have to do IME is to not allow ds2 anywhere near her bed (have owned 3 black labs in the past) so she always has a safe place to escape to

Disenchanted · 12/02/2008 20:35

I know how sad you are I am in the north west and have to rehome my baby rabbits

throckenholt · 12/02/2008 20:40

labs don't live that long - she may only have another 2-4 years left. And old dogs don't need really long walks every day - if you can get her out for a good walk 3-4 times a week that is probably enough.

If you can keep DS away from her (stair gate ?) so she gets quiet time she will probably be happy.

It will ease in a year or so as DS2 gets older.

bossybritches · 13/02/2008 14:13

............and they DO love "their" babies. Our labs have always been VERY forgiving.

bossybritches · 13/02/2008 14:16

Just a thought, could you find someone near you to help walk her 2-3 times a week? There may be loads of people who'd love a dog but not teh commitmetnof one all day every day (due to work/housing restrictions etc)

My mum is retired & likes to travel so a dog doesn't fit in with her lifestyle, but she's ALWAYS had a dog.She now dog-sits for several neighbours while they're out or away for w/ends when she is around. She loves it & they her- she's an extra granny!

Wisteria · 13/02/2008 14:19

I don't actually agree that older dogs only need walking 3-4 times a week, not labradors anyway.

Your dog will be far happier with 1-2 shorter ventures outside a day, the joints get very stiff as they get older and they need to exercise, otherwise they become easily overweight as well.

We have a little old man who walks his neighbour's dog every day as he enjoys it - I wouldn't be surprised if you have someone near you who could help out - or put ds in the pushchair and off you go!

bossybritches · 13/02/2008 15:27

I know my old boy would be climbing the WALLS without a daily trot or two. He is a bit stiff too but pesters for England if he wants to go out ,then bounces like a pup whenhe sees a lead!!

Wisteria · 13/02/2008 15:49

amazing aren't they.

My Dad's old springer was 15 and riddled with arthritis (could hardly get up and down or walk round the house) however if he saw long grass, he turned into a rabbit

bossybritches · 13/02/2008 16:31

snigger Ours is like that with water (choccie lab ) he LURVES swimming!

Wisteria · 13/02/2008 16:33
