Help, how can i stop my cats weeing everywhere?

I have 2 cats (9 years old) and for the last few months they have been weeing all over the house.

It started with the beds, so i made sure bedroom doors were shut so they started on the hall carpet and now i,ve just sat in a puddle on the sofa ,YUK.

The whole house is starting to smell, they have a cat flap which they are using so i don't know why they won't go outside!

Please help!

Have they got a litter tray? If not then I would introduce one.

Clean any affected areas with a solution of biological washing powder, the enzymes break down the smell which can cause them to return to spoil the same spot.

Cat soiling is often stress-related, have there been any changes in the household which could have affected them? You could try using a Feliway diffuser which is supposed to help destress them.

I was trying to avoid a litter tray as i hate them and really don't know where to put it. I think you are right though it is the lesser of two evils!

Can't think why they would be stressed, unless they can pick up on the murderous vibes from me since all this started!!

Thanks for your help!

I had the same problem many years ago, and would second the Feliway/biological washing powder approach, it does work.

BUt I was also told to wipe the area down with surgical spirit (or vodka!) after the washing powder, for a double whammy against the enzymes.

Thanks, where can i get a Feliway diffuser?

Will try the surgical spirit, refuse to waste good vodka on those bloody cats!

We have a tray by the back door as puss stays in at night. Surely better than a sofa full of wee! Once they have got used to it you could put it outside the cat flap in the day to encourage them to go outdoors.

You can get the Feliway from your vet, or I'm sure you could find them online.

I second having a cat litter tray, especially during the winter months when some cats just don't want to go out into the howling wind and rain.

The biggest problem is going to be completely getting rid of the pee smell, as they will return to the scene of the crime if there is the slightest whiff. I had problems a few months ago when my then 7 month old tom sprayed in a corner of the dining room (the day before his op to remove his bits) and I just couldn't get rid of the smell. I tried everything - bicarb, disinfectant, bio washing powder etc. In the end I resorted to buying expensive stuff off the internet, 'urine-off' pmsl and I have to say that it is brilliant. Very pricey, but one application got rid of the smell completely and he hasn't done it again since. So if all else fails, I recommend it! Good luck.
