Cat not interested in toys

I've had my cat for almost a year. He's around 5 years old and was a rescue/stray. He's my first cat so I don't have anything to compare to. The problem is he's just not interested in toys - zero interest and he's actually scared of some. The rescue centre also said he was like this but would come round eventually. He did show some interest in a wand toy but became scared of it after catching prey outdise. He's got a cat flap but has been spending most of the day inside over winter. He's also got a cat tree with a good view out the window and can see birds and lots of activity. He is generally affectionate and loves sleeping on laps.
My questions are: does anyone have any engaging toy suggestions? And should I be concerned that he doesn't want to play? Isn't playing normal cat behaviour?
Thanks in advance!

Cats generally aren't that bothered with toys past the kitten stage. Some will play if you wave something in front of them, others will just look at you like you're mad. He sounds happy and content, I'd chuck the toys and let him be.

I’ve had a cat who didn’t like toys, she was more than happy with fusses and company. She did like a cat tunnel and would roll about it in when the mood took her. But that’s about it. Don’t worry!

Mine is also a rescue. He just stares blankly at toys however much I play with them.

Jackson Galaxy has some great videos on how to play with you cat - this has worked brilliantly with my girl cat (turned out I was useless at playing with cats) but a total dead loss with the boy.

Thanks for the comments! That's reassuring! He seems happy in himself, l was just a bit worried he was missing out. I'll have a look on YouTube for the Jackson galaxy videos but I won't worry if there's no change.

Mine rarely play with them. They like feathers but really are not bothered.

Mine is three and a bit, and he is the only cat I have ever had who loves toys. He likes small woollen tennis balls and string balls, he is ambi pawed and could play for England, he has a shiny bell that he likes when he can remember where it has rolled to, he has a fish flirt toy than he loves, he has a small black creature that he carries about and beats up until it submits, I think it contains cat nip, he has a snowman toy that you can fill with dreamies that he knocks around ( when it has dreamies, not otherwise), he enjoys his encounters with toilet roll inner tubes. He likes his scratching post. He doesn’t like crinkly toys so crinkly owl and crinkly banana are ignored. He doesn’t like things with feathers much. The expensive cardboard scratching toy with the little trapped balls was seen as a chewing toy, as are any cardboard boxes he finds.

He is happy to play on his own, though I join in with the flirt toy and sometimes act as a striker when he want to practice saving penalties. I often come down in the morning and find most of the toys have been played with overnight!

The only toy that any of my others liked was a catnip toy that turned one of them into a drooling glassy eyed junkie. I had to bin the toy before he sold the rest of us to raise funds to maintain his habit.
