Should I let sleeping cats lie?

Am expecting I may get flamed for this

We have an elderly cat. He is 16 and in the last year has got quite thin. We have upped his food by squeezing in an extra meal and he is always happy to see it and is eating well. He always used to be an outdoor cat to the point that apart from meals we rarely saw him but in the last 18 months he has become much more stay at home and I suspect he now cannot leave the garden as it involves climbing a tree. My husband and I have decided that if we took him to the vet and anything was seriously wrong we would pts as we wouldn't want to put him through it- he is elderly, he hates the vet, he won't take tablets and won't eat food if it has powder on it. At the moment there are no outward signs of being in pain, he still eats well, he is toiletting, isn't snappy with us or the kids and just enjoys spending the evenings on laps. However with his weightloss and I have noticed today there is some blood in his stool I know we should take him to the vet but I fully suspect that if we did we wouldn't be bringing him home. I guess the question is whether we should take him to the vet to see if there is something wrong knowing that if there was anything majorly wrong we wouldnt be bringing him home or should we just leave him be while he appears to be happy and is still eating well (if he stopped eating or showed any outward sign of pain then that would change things and I would take him to the vet)

I don't know what to do?

There may be no outward signs of pain, but cats do hide it very well. I'm not a vet, but surely weight loss is not a good sign, nor is blood in stool. I'd take him to the vet. If the vet says it's something or nothing you can stop worrying, if it's something serious and you decide to PTS you'll know you saved him from suffering.

How are things now @forgotmyusername1?

Being a cat with so many years, the best thing is a complete review, since it generates health problems
