How much does it cost for month for a cat?

Just moved to a new house and planning to get a family cat.
Can anyone share their monthly budget on a cat? I can only think of food/treats, vets, litter and toys, did I miss anything?

OP I hope you don’t mind me hijacking your thread. I’m also looking into indoor cat ownership and looking at the practicality and costs. Can anyone recommend a pet insurance company and any that should be avoided.

One thing I would recommend for an indoor cat is a really good cat food. I recently took on a rescue who was on a decent enough dry food but was pooing huge amount of enormous stinky poo several times a day. Changed him to Katkins, which costs an arm and a leg ( I don’t know how people afford it with more than one cat) and within two days he was doing one reasonable sized non stinky poo a day. He is now able to go outside ( when it’s not raining and I have checked the garden -on request- for lurking foxes ) but will keep him on katkins as there will still be a litter tray option available.

oh, you do need freezer space as it is delivered frozen.

Viques. Thanks for the recommendation. If I get an indoor cat they will have no access to outdoors as I’m in a second floor flat.

It depend, the type of food, if you take him regularity to the vet and the country what you are living

I've paid over £500 in vets bills alone for my dCat this month. Don't scrimp on insurance is all I can say....

Which insurance firms do any of you use? Are you happy with them. I’ve got a phone call with a rescue place tomorrow who has an indoor cat for rehoming. She’s 7 and looks a sweetie.

I'm with Manypets - haven't had to make a claim yet so far though (touch wood!).

1 cat is with PetPlan because I have heard nothing but good things about them.

The older cat is with animal friends because Petplan wouldn't even give a quote for him and they were excellent with a claim. The vet claimed direct on their portal and the money was paid to them quickly.

I'm going to switch the other cat over to Animal Friends on renewal as it is so much cheaper.

When you buy pet insurance, go for a "Covered for Life" policy. It's more expensive but means that you'll still be covered for any ongoing medical conditions that your cat develops.

If your cat develops a medical issue under the cheaper 12mth policies, they generally aren't covered the following year because it's then classed as a pre-existing condition.
