New to us cat. What to do?

Homed a 6 year old indoor cat today. Naturally he's bolted under a bed, but what shall we do?

He's alone in a shut bedroom with his own cat bed, litter box, preferred food at water, plus his climbing platform and a toy.

He's been here an hour. When should I check on him?

He's naturally quite nervy, I'm told

I’d probably leave him for tonight, and then tomorrow morning go in to take him breakfast and sit with him for a bit on your phone / with a book, see if he comes out. He might need a bit longer though if nervy.

I’d not worry too much, just do what @Haus1234 suggested. Also remember, he may get skittish with the fireworks happening tonight! Goes without saying, keep him indoors for a good few weeks just to get him used to the house (well that’s what I was told to do with my cats!)

Eventually he'll come out. He just needs time to get used to the new smells and sounds.

Feeling sorry for the fireworks displays tonight as it's been raining steadily, but that might work better for the puss.

I'll leave him be tonight, as suggested.

Any other settling-in ideas welcome, thank you.

Invest in a large supply of Dreamies, if you haven't already, and dole them out regularly.

God yes - I cat sit, so I know a lot of cats, and I've never sat for a cat that doesn't LOVE Dreamies.
He'll come out eventually OP.
When he does - can we have a pic of your new overlord? 😉

Agree with leaving him tonight then tomorrow go in and sit and read to him so he gets used to your voice. Doesn't matter what, mumsnet threads are fine.

EmmaC78 · 05/11/2022 17:49

It may take weeks for him to settle if he is a nervous type. I agree with the dreamies recommendation.

Thanks. Much appreciated. New replies very welcome, too. We have Pet Classics music on Classic FM playing quietly in his room, tho his ex owner says he isn't that bothered by fireworks.

Well. Things moved quickly....

My bro is a bit if a cat whisperer. He came around tonight. I was a big 'cat is upstairs in an unused bedroom with its kit, being left alone until morning'. Bro disappears.

To cat-whisper, who comes out from underneath the bed, fleeing back with other approaching footsteps.

Bro goes home; DH and I decide to take his advice; small, frequent encounters. 'He'll never adapt to you unless you're there'. So we did. In an hour, he was all over the upstairs of the house, us sitting quietly, the odd rub; sniff sniff- then SHAT ON OUR BED! Little sod. But- I get it. The place our smell was strongest. I saw him do it thus mopped up quickly.

He'll only do that once! However; from under-bed terror to house exploration in 4 hours? That seems positive. Bed-shitting not withstanding.
