Guinea pigs - wee problem?

We have two dear little female guinea pigs, now about 9 months old. One of them, when she wees, always seems to get it all over her tummy. Her sister doesn't do this. It seems to be getting more frequent - quite often when we pick her up she has a soggy tummy - to the disgust of our dcs!

Dh thinks we should take her to the vet, but I thought I would check with the knowledgable piggy owners of MN first. So, is she normal?

Thanks for the quick response, Fransmom (I have a Fran too - dd2!) So it doesn't sound like little Molly's problem is something you just expect from gps then. (Queue forking out for vet...)

not sure if it's a medical problem but would get it checked out anyway... what do you bed them on? you could try cat litter (compressed saw dust in pellets) as it,s very absorbent and very easy to clean away the soiled areas... watch out when the warmer weather comes with the flies, very nasty if they lay thier eggs on your guinea pig it's a big problem with rabbits with messy bums...

mum2mum ! Don't worry - we are always tenderly cleaning her up with Kleenex! We bed them on hay laid over newspaper, with woodshavings in the other half of the hutch (funnily enough, this is where they tend to 'go to the loo' , in the far back corner, bless them.

think maybe we should get them both checked over by a vet after all - they've never been before as have always been well.

Could be a bladder stone - can cause incontinance issues. Vet should be able to check that for you.

A quick update for those kind enough to have posted. Took her to the vet who was lovely and gentle with her, and checked to see if there were any stones. Couldn't feel any big ones, but said a tiny one too small to feel could be doing it, and to try keeping her on a green leafy veg and guinea pellet diet, and water, and if there is anything small that should shift it. Didn't want to go down route of lots of tests at this stage as would be a bit draconian - and scary for the piggy. Apparently it is best not to give fruit (we have given them all types )as the acidity can be the cause of stones.

He did say she and her sister (they are inseparable so she came too!) looked very healthy and happy, so that was reassuring.

Tried them on carrot tops at his suggestion (our green grocer sells bunched carrots) and they went wild for them!
