Boxer or Bulldog

Hi,

Hoping to get some advice.

We are looking at getting a puppy in December after deciding for months and planning doggy daycare etc.

We are looking at boxers and British bulldogs, just looking for some advice and recommendations really as we are torn we love both breeds, the dog would be in obidience training as soon as 2nd jabs are done and will be exercised twice a day.

I've heard that bulldogs can be mega lazy and also heard boxers can be hyperactive - can anyone give any personal experiences with these dogs please?

Thanks

No not too late I'm 100% open to other breeds, we do also love labradors which I've had my whole life but they molt so much so that's what put me off

Boxers shed too. Having lived with a lab and a boxer whilst the lab left more hair around the place it was easier to clean up, the boxer hair seemed to weave itself into fabric.

I think you're also far more likely to be able to find a healthy lab than a boxer. Get a lab and a cordless vacuum :-)

Lab coats are also incredibly easy to care for, I don't spend the summer picking grass seeds out of coats or teasing knots out of fur like friends with spaniels or poodle crosses.

We've got an English Bulldog and he's fab. They love sleeping so they're not for very active families but he's such a dude. They're intelligent, headstrong, stubborn but very good with kids. Ours absolutely idolises the kids. He doesn't have any breathing problems other than he's a snorer! But we're also very careful with his weight - most bulldogs we see out are overweight. The vets always say he's the healthiest bulldog they've met. Nothing phases them either, they're not nervy or anxious dogs. And they're brilliant with other dogs - although no other dog plays like a bulldog does!

Bulldogs in particular have been overbred to the point of cruelty. If you're a dog lover then please don't fund that.

Whatever you do, just research the breed and whether they have been overbred/ messed up by selective breeding.

Dogs with flat noses and bulging eyes are the main issues, but also the little sausage dogs with spine problems. It's all due to humans overbreeding them.

It depends what kind of a lifestyle you have, boxers will need plenty of exercise and are very high energy.
We sadly lost our bulldog in the summer after 11 years. We researched for months to find a reputable breeder which certainly paid off in the long term.
Bulldogs are hands down my favourite breed but they do come with a list of health issues, but just make sure you get pet insurance!

Bulldogs suffer with breathing issues and cannot be walked much in heat at all. They also suffer with joint issues so make sure you keep their weight low.
They also can get ingrown tails as they are born with corkscrew tails, you need to buy special malecetic wipes to get rid of yeast in the tail pockets.
They also have face yeast in the folds and need daily cleaning to prevent infection.
They also can get cherry eye and will need an operation to correct.

Joint issues like luxating patella and arthritis are almost certain.

BUT they are one of the most loving, gentle, funny dog breeds!

Neither. I've had Pugs for decades. Spent their lives having surgery to breathe, see, scratching with allergies etc.. and that was just the tip of the iceberg. At one point my vet told me he could run his surgery on Pugs and French Bulldogs alone. It's so sad. They're all lovely dogs but I've moved back to a breed that can breathe now. Lastly, don't pay a penny to a breeder who doesn't health test both mum and dad.

www.champdogs.co.uk/?mobile_site=1

is the best website for breeders who health test. Good luck 🐾
