Neutering sort of feral kittens

So I moved into my house a couple of years who and we had a cat visitor who I presumed belonged to one of the neighbours. She wasn't particularly interested in food, she would just pop into the garden or occasionally walk into the house to say hello and go away again.

Then she disappeared for a while and came back with two sweet kittens. They raced right into my house the first time the appeared and were so friendly. I thought aw the neighbours have a few cats now. Didn't think much more about it.

The kittens kept coming round to play and soon ended up getting pregnant too. I was quite annoyed at this stage that the owners didn't have them neutered. Eventually they too went away for a few weeks and then reappeared a few months later with a gang of kittens each in tow.

Then one of my neighbours moved house and maybe coincidentally but maybe not, the cats started spending all of their time outside my house. I now have a gang of about 13 cats and kittens permanently on my doorstep!

Now they seem to be community cats and go round all the neighbours houses looking for food and attention (some are v friendly and some aren't keen) I'm still not sure if they have an owner but the original (now grandmother) cat turned up one day after having been spayed (side all shaved and surgical scar) so someone has taken the time to do that.

Anyway I have decided enough is enough and contacted cats protection and I am going to try and trap a few tonight to take to the vet tomorrow to be neutered. Two things I wanted to ask really:

  1. Am I doing the right thing? I know this will be really stressful for the poor cats and I feel so so guilty at putting them through the trauma even though it is necessary.
  1. Any hints or tips? I have borrowed a trap from the vets and they say I have to trap them tonight. Seems a long time for the poor things to be scared in a cage.

Thanks for update :)

Brilliant update. Well done!

I only had one to neuter; the vet said to me that he will probably bond strongly with me now but that even if he didn't and went off in a huff, "At least you know you have done the right thing for him, extended his life by a good few years and reduced the risk of him scrapping and fighting and having kittens."

My reward? He brought me a dead rat the next day. Um, thanks!

Still can't de-flea him as he won't tolerate being held and a spot-on so he's still outside. Will be calling Cats Protection again on Monday for advice on that one.

How many have you treated so far?

Thanks @GreenFingersWouldBeHandy! I think we have 11 cats in the colony (3 adult and 8 kittens but i suspect more might appear before long) one adult has been spayed and I have two kittens spayed and captured another two tonight so I'm almost halfway through (not really I know but I'm trying to think positive here 😅)

I suspect one of the kittens I have captured tonight might be pregnant so she might come back as she is. Hopefully she just needs a good worming. If she is pregnant and the vet operates I'm prepared to keep her in the house for as long as she can needs...we are very fond of her and she is one of the few who likes being handled and in the house.

It's going to keep getting harder to catch them because the two I caught originally kept trying to get in the trap tonight! They'd literally go through all of that again for a bite of tuna Grin

Fantastic job your doing OP, it will make such a difference to these cats lives. They are very fortunate to have you on their side. Cats protection league often advertise for free vouchers to get cats spayed and neutered so no excuse for irresponsibel ownership.
Local supermarkets may be willing to help re feeding them. l work in a supermarket and l am actually surprised how often they do agree to donate stuff for free, rightly so considering profits they make.

Update! There are 12 cats that I can see not 11. However! I caught an additional one yesterday and 4 this morning so I have now trapped 9. 1 adult is already spayed so that just leaves 2 adult females still to trap. Now this will be a challenge because they don't visit my garden anywhere near as much as they used to. But am I right in thinking they don't breed over winter? Maybe when the weather gets colder they'll visit more and I can get them then. Just not sure how urgently I need to get them.

Hi op I know this thread is over a year old but I was wondering if you managed to catch them all in the end?
