Cat vomited a worm

Purpletopaz42 · 16/09/2022 17:11

My cat hasn't displayed any symptoms of being unwell, she's been eating and playing normally but this morning she was sick and there was a worm in it. We've booked an appointment for the vet tomorrow but I'm worried about her, I'm not sure what kind of worm it is. It kind of looks like a piece of spaghetti but much thinner. My husband has put it in a bag for the vet, it feels quite hard through the packet. I've not touched it myself. I'm also concerned cause I'm 9 weeks pregnant and I don't know if there's a risk of me catching it. Any advice on what kind of worm it is, how I can look after my cat until the vet visit tomorrow and if there's a risk of becoming infected from cat worms would be appreciated. Thank you

Do you give her monthly and 3 monthly parasite treatments?

Pixiedust1234 · 16/09/2022 17:19

Are you sure its not pasta spaghetti or an earth worm?

You are doing the right thing though, taking her to the vets and keeping the evidence (or photo with something else for size). Get your partner to look after the totally, ie feed, wash bowls etc until you have been given the all clear.

Please come back and update us (maybe with gross picture?)

I think they're roundworms - I remember mine having them when they were tiny. I believe can be passed on through mother's milk.

Is the cat regularly wormed?

Purpletopaz42 · 16/09/2022 17:30

I haven't been worming her regularly. She was wormed and fleeded when we adopted her, they estimated that she is 1 years old and she was found roaming the streets. She's our first cat and is a totally indoor cat, so I didn't realise that she could pick up worms from being inside. I obviously after this will regularly worm her.

It's definitely not spaghetti, it is slightly thinner and we've not cooked any in a while. I don't know if it's an earthworm? I don't know where she'd get it from.

When she was sick, it was kind of coiled round, in a circle and we put it in the bin but as an after thought, my husband fished it out to show the vet and in that time, it had straightened out, into a line.

My mum said it could be an elastic band, that's what she thought it looked like but again, I don't know where it came from and my husband firstly, is convinced it was moving when it came out and secondary, now it's in the bag, it feels quite firm, so I do think it's a type or worm.

Just wanted to update everyone. The vet said it was roundworm and they've given her a 3 month worming tablet, they said any worms will come out in her poo and she'll be absolutely fine, which I'm very pleased and relieved about. Thank you everyone for your messages

Probably worth keeping on top of her parasite treatments. Even housecats need to b flead and wormed. Fleas travel, I got an infestation from a bag of donated kids clothes. It's just not worth it for the sake of a tenner a month

Thanks for the update! Im surprised indoor cats can get worms, so good to know. Learn something new everyday on here.

They can catch them from eating houseflies apparently. Never knew that.
