Went to stroke DD's cat today and he was breathing really fast, presumed chest infection or the like, straight to vet - vet thinks he may have leukemia or leukemia type illness and it doesn't look very good for him.

This is DD's pride and joy, we've had the cat (and his brother) since they were born, we got rid of two of the litter and kept these two. She will be devastated.

Vet is taking blood and I have to call after lunch. Please pray if you that type of stuff or think good thoughts or something

Wangle
I think a second opinion is needed here.
My friend is a veterinary assistant, and they sometimes email or telephone universities to speak to veterinary experts on various things.
Is this a possibility?

beautifulgirls · 29/01/2008 23:07

Is the practice a veterinary hospital or just a veterinary surgery? There is a difference and only the best equipped places that comform to strict standards of practice and equipment etc are allowed to use the title of Hospital in their name. IF your vet can not tell you of any nearby specialists (bristol vet school would be the obvious place to look out of county) then find a veterinary hospital nearby and get a second opinion there. It will not mean an ultrasound scanner etc will be available but better chance of that. Any vet can also refer Xrays for opinions from specialists too without sending the cat, so at least there can be some additional help here.

Have they talked about feline asthma to you at all? If this is a purely respiratory issue that would be high on my list of checks to be done. Cardiac issues should also be checked, even if the heart sounds normal when they listen to it - ultrasound would be the most useful.

beautifulgirls · 29/01/2008 23:08

Wangle - do I know you vaguely from another mums board - ovu? If so I'll tell you who I am over there.

wangle99 · 30/01/2008 07:52

There is one practise in Cornwall calling themselves 'Duchy Veterinary hospital' but they don't appear to have a website (although I'm sure I found one before). My practise does have x-ray and I would have thought ultrasound as they really are one of the best in the area.

Vet said there were some adhesions to the bottom of his lungs which she didn't like the look of not sure if this is relevant. Hopefully going in to see him later.

beautifulgirls - yes you do know me from there and from the fact you are on this particular board (pets) I think I know who you are as well which is why you know so much lol

i would have thought that to visualise the adhesions he would have had to have x-rayed or ultra sounded. I just wonder if they need to communicate to you in a bit more detail what investigations they have actually done. It almost seems like they are watching and waiting. I would be inclined to ask for a break down of what has been done to date, frome a financial viewpoint especially.

I would have honestly thought x-ray would have been the first thing they have done. I take it cat flu has been ruled out, but that tends to be upper respiratory (doesnt it?).

I hope kitty gets better soon - it is encouraging that he is hanging on in there.

wangle99 · 30/01/2008 10:04

They have x-rayed and I have seen the film (sorry thought I'd already put this). She showed me area of pneumonia and also adhesions.

They have tested for cat flu, leukemia and aids and all negative.

Cat has been having steam baths (which helped) and also every other day antibiotics by injection (not sure if was having them daily to begin with)

Hmm, this still does not sound right to me. Adhesions diagnosed by x-ray?? I would also be concerned what antibiotics are being used too as it does not sound like they are the "strong" ones - for lack of a better description.
Was this "pneumonia" localised to a specific area of the lungs or was it spread about a bit?

I have sent you a pm on the other site too

lucyellensmum · 30/01/2008 12:38

i was also wondering about the antibiotics beautiful girls. I would have hoped that the cat would have had that via the nebuliser. Isn't that bisolvan (spelling!).

Wngle, you seem unsure of your vet, i dont have a clue if they are taking the right approach or not, but if BG is concerned, i would be inclined to seek a second opinion.

beautifulgirls · 30/01/2008 15:15

Lucyellensmum - Bisolvan is a powder you add to feed - helps loosen up the mucus produced so it is easier to sneeze out or cough up. I've never heard of it in a nebuliser personally though I guess anything is possible. The steam inhalation will have done much the same thing I expect.

lucyellensmum · 30/01/2008 16:05

beautiful girls, i probably made that up then I used to work in a vets and remember them putting something in the nebuliser, probably had bisolvan as well, of course now it is going to bug me what they actually did put in it!!

beautifulgirls · 30/01/2008 16:21

Doesn't mean it isn't done - just that I have not used it like that!

lucyellensmum · 30/01/2008 16:49

maybe, although its more likely that i have got the name of the stuff wrong.

wangle99 · 31/01/2008 12:25

Thank you BG and Lucyellensmum.

Went to see DJ yesterday and he seemed really well and VERY pleased to see us.

I'm not sure how much information I should be getting daily, all the vet nurses say is 'we are continuing with his treatment' which is the antibiotics.

Going in tomorrow evening for chat with vet and we will see what she says....

lucyellensmum · 31/01/2008 14:52

wangle, i used to be a vet nurse and very often that is all there is to say, but i appreaciate that is very frustrating for owners. We would always accomodate daily visits, is it possible for you to do that, then it might be possible for you to collar someone involved in his case and you can see for yourself how he is doing. I would have thought they would be giving him the ABs and the steam bath to clear his breathing up. He seems to be putting up a good fight againts whatever is ailing him. I hope the vet has more news for you tomorrow.

beautifulgirls · 01/02/2008 21:00

Wangle has DJ home now - he is doing well HOORAH!

wangle99 · 01/02/2008 22:31

Thank you BG for posting this, just been one of those evenings.

DJ has been wandering around looking a bit lost but since DD came home (she has been in a pantomime this evening) he has gone straight up to bed with her! Definately her cat.

Thanks for all help and advice, sorting out insurance now!
