Rabbit spaying-any advice?

Our house rabbit is female (we think) and is nipping a little bit when running about. She gets frisky and circles around and around our ankles.

Have any other rabbit owners had experience of having their female rabbits spayed?

Do I even need to get it done, as she lives by herself?

If you did get it done, how much did it cost?

Thanks in advance!!

how old is it? If you only think its female you prob need a vet

seriously though...do it!! Ours is too old to be neutered now and would prob never survive the op and we soooo wish he had been done!

Maidamess · 21/01/2008 18:22

Why do you wish he had been done? Is he aggressive?

I'm not sure I even know the pros and cons of getting it done, and the 'rabbit websites' all advocate it, but they would, wouldn't they?

You are now officially my mumsnet rabbit guru, btw)

the are MNetterz more knowledgable btw

I wish we had had him done because tbh its just annoying! He isn't aggressive in teh slightest, just that for a few weeks every now and then he gets grunty and runs round my feet and nibbly (but only of my slippers )

I can't see him running under my feet at mo as i am 32 weeks pregnant and he is only a dwarf lop so am worried i will squish him!!

if i were you i would get her done. it costs about £80 i think. it stopps them getting aggressive etc and also stops uterine cancer which kills about 50% of female rabbits

nortynamechanger · 30/01/2008 19:41

If a doe is going to become agressive it is between 6-10 mths usually.

We are considering having ours done for health reasons, she is coming up for a year.

Thanks. I did go and chat to the vet. nurse who said it would cost about £95. which kind of puts me off! I know I'm mean and stingey but thats a whole lotta cash for a frisky rabbit!

hmmmm, tbh I would check your sexing because that sounds like a boy rabbit to me!
it is quite expensive to have a girl rabbit neutered but uterine cancer is a pretty common cause of bunny death, so I would consider it for that reason.
can you get a quote from your vet?

nortynamechanger · 30/01/2008 19:53

Some vets have payment plans

Maidamess · 30/01/2008 19:55

We are assuming 'she' is a female. The sexing process was done in my friends back garden, so not particularly scientific!

My daughter will be horrifed if it is a male, it's called Millie.

circling round ankles is a mating ritual I would guess you have a boy bunny

We have two female rabbits. They started 'jack russelling' (see 'inititing sex' thread in 'Relationships'!!) each other when they were about 6 months old, which the vet said was normal (I was panicking as I thought one must be male after all).

I did have them neutered to prevent uterine cancer.
