ive had them since 2021 theyre not aggresive but have theyre squables so im wondering if more experienced rat owners can give me advise on this also ive been thinking of the future when one passes away i know theyre supposed to live in pairs for company but dont know how the surviving one woud take to a new rat

Yes. It's better for rats to live in bigger groups. Two is the absolute bare minimum, but three or more is healthier for them than two.

There is plenty of info online about how to introduce a new rat into your existing group. Generally, it's much easier with female rats. They may squabble less with an extra friend, since the dynamic will be different, and it may be that your two just don't like each other much.

This are some great groups:

We have four boys, used to have 6 but two have sadly departed.
They're the best pets!
I was going to suggest two more but can see you've done that.
Have you put them straight in together?

masterofdoomv1 · 18/08/2022 20:58

yeah i put them straight in amber i was nervous of one of the older rats shes not overly aggressive but likes her food and will take food from the other one but so far everything seems ok earlier i have log in cage and they were all sleeping together

Often they do bond (or at least accept each other) straight away, especially with females.

I'm really happy you were able to get more. Let us know how it goes!

I'm picking up a new girlie from a rescue next week.
