We have a male JRT. He's 10 and entire. When we got him as a pup we already had a female collie and he grew up happily with her. She died a few years back. Now we are adopting a young female collie (already spayed). JRT is confrontational with other dominant males but is normally OK with females (plays with them) but he has taken a dislike to a friend's female lab, which worries me a bit - a lot of growling and we think they'd fight. She is dominant, though, and our new collie seems to be a nervous type who will not challenge JRT's place as head of the pack. What we're wondering is if DH should take the JRT away for a few days so new collie can get used to the house? But she'll smell the JRT. The collie is going to have a fenced-off run outside to herself at first (daytime). But how would you handle the introduction? The last thing we want is for the JRT to feel someone is invading his patch.

I have introduced a new dog into the existing pack by meeting outside on neutral territory, going for a walk together but side by side with someone else from the household walking existing dog and me walking new dog and just letting them get used to each other on the lead but only sniffing each other if both seemed OK with it.

Only then did we head home and bring the new dog inside.

Have the adoption Center not offered to have them meet at their place before everything is finalised?

Thank you. I've thought about the walk option. She is being delivered to our home after a long car journey. Best thing is for us to meet up the road, maybe?

They've already done a home check so don't need to see our set-up.
