Hi,
my cat was hit by a car on Wednesday evening & suffered a fractured pelvis. We spent £2500 Wednesday night for x day, out of hours emergency appointment, overnight stay & pain meds. We was told depending on the fracture she may not need surgery, it may heal with lots of rest. After doing CT scan it turns out she needs surgery for 1 side to be pinned, the other side to have a plate inserted. Op to take 90 mins & has a very good chance of survival & recovering. There is a chance of nerve damage however they can’t see that until after op. Vet very positive about recovery & surgery as done this many times etc.

operation takes 3 hours & wasn’t able to insert the plate as it would have been too close to joint but other side has been pinned which has straightened up the pelvis.. operation cost £5k on top of £2500 paid Wednesday. We are insured but only covers up to £4K.

called this afternoon to see how she was as was told we can have her home by Saturday (tomorrow) & she has no feeling in her left leg & they are having to manually relieve her bladder as they think she has nerve damage, she also hasn’t opened her bowels & they have found faeces in her colon which weren’t there before.

she’s currently on ketamine for pain relief & they will show us how to massage her bladder so we can relieve her every day. The feeling in her leg may come back, she may be able to go to the toilet independently but it’s a guessing & waiting game.

i feel absolutely heartbroken & stuck on what to do. We’ve spent a lot of money on her for her to be potentially disabled & need help going to the toilet. I have a 3 month old baby so have my hands full. Am I cruel in thinking the best option would be to put her to sleep or do I give her a chance & worry she is suffering?

anybody had this happen to them & their cat make a semi full recovery?

the cat isthe apple of my eye & im completely heartbroken by this but want to make the right decision & not have her suffer.

I agree, I would put her to sleep. It's heartbreaking isn't it. X

I'm so sorry but I have to agree with pp, my cat was hit by a car his bottom half was broke. We were told we could try surgery but there was no guarantee and they didn't know how his bowels/bladder were so we PTS. It was devastating, even now over a year later it makes us sad but I could hear and see how much pain he was in (despite being on ketamine) and we had the make the decision with his comfort in mind. I promise you this is the most selfless decision you can make for your cat.

I'm really sorry this has happened to you and well done for giving her a chance.
Usually with pelvic injuries in cats, you make sure they have bladder function before operating but maybe her pelvis was really unstable.
Definitely give her a chance
Cats are amazing creatures and really good at fixing themselves.
Emptying her bladder will be a big task with a little one as well but you will know in a few weeks if it's worth persevering
I'd give her a fortnight at least
Maybe you could find a local Cattery that could take her and do this for you ?
Maybe your vets could recommend a vet nurse to come in a few times a day to do this for you ?
You have come so far, the outcome might not be positive but it's really worth a few weeks try

l think you have done your absolute best for her, l would put her to sleep.

Thank you for your kind messages.

i felt the kinder option would be to put her to sleep at the beginning but my partner wanted to give her a chance but I feel we’ve wasted a lot of money and she’s not going to have a good quality of life. When I mentioned PTS to the vet she made me feel guilty as the cat could make a semi ok recovery.. but they can’t guarantee that.. so I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place 😔

The same thing happened to a neighbour's cat. It had to be taken to the vet to empty its bowels and couldn't walk. They had it put to sleep after a few weeks and felt that (with hindsight) that the vet should have recommended that option in the first place.

this is what would have happened with us. They were going to show us how to massage her bladder to relieve her everyday however she wasn’t going for a poo either & was completely paralysed in the back left leg.

we put her to sleep today at 2:30pm and although it was heartbreaking, we were there with her giving her kisses and let her go peacefully

Sorry for your loss, you did the right thing x Flowers

You did the right thing.
I think that was disgraceful of the vet. Lots of money and that poor animal wasn't going to have any sort of quality of life at all.
Well done and I am sorry for your loss Flowers
