OMG so excited, going to collect our new puppy tomorrow

We are going to collect our new puppy tomorrow, we have been talking about it for ages. When DP called the breeder we were recommended to last week they told us that they had a litter that were ready to leave their mother.

We have the choice of 3 bitches, we have seen the pictures and they are all beautiful. They are Weimaraners, blue eyed.

Ooooh can't wait, haven't told the children yet

How lovely. Have you got everything ready? I would suggest letting the dog have some quiet settling in time before the children go near her. We see a Weimaraner when we do the school run and her body looks like velvet.

GoodGollyMissMolly · 11/01/2008 13:17

Exciting, have you chosen a name?

I'm broody for another dog

SomeLikeItHot · 11/01/2008 13:18

awww lucky you!!!! Weimaraners are beautiful dogs and sooo cute when they're little - loads of loose wrinkly skin!!!! My dad has one and its such a lovely dog!

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 11/01/2008 13:18

I'd like a labrador-type pup more than I can say but no can do.

Enjoy!

Haven't chosen a name yet, we decided to go with the same route as babies, have an ideas list and see what we think she looks like!

Currently her name is Amelie, which I actually like a lot.

Oooh how exciting. I collected my 8 week old chocolate lab last week. We are all totally smitten.

Like the name btw.

OliviaMumsnet · 11/01/2008 13:30

Yes me too

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 11/01/2008 13:36

I am broodier for a dog than I've ever been for a child! I want one so much, have been without one virtually my whole adult life for various reasons and for the last 7 years, because of DS2. It would be cruel to get one (to the dog!) because DS would hurt it; it would bite him eventually as any self respecting pooch would.

I don't know why I read these threads.. I must block this section!! But I seem to have to torture myself! I have such awful dog-envy.

I'd be quite happy with are rescue dog (pref without emotional issues!) but would love a labrador type. If we had the right sort of house, where there were enough space to keep the dog/DS seperate it would be ok I guess. But even our new house won't be suitable. Although it does have a small dining room.

I am going to cosmically order myself a dog and the right circumstances to get one (which must not include DS not living here in any shape or form obviously! )!

bratnav · 11/01/2008 13:40

We did actually consider trying to get a rescue puppy, esp after Christmas, but the local home didn't have any, also they said that as we already have a dog and small children they wouldn't be keen to place a dog with us

You would have thought that they would be happy that people who already have experience with dogs wanted to adopt?

If I am clever enough, I havde added a picture to my profile....

Oh bless her little heart!! [melts]

bratnav · 11/01/2008 14:01

I know, she just looks so squidgy and adorable.

Trying to ground myself with thoughts of wee puddles, possible damage to the house, weeks possibly months of training before she behaves but it is no use

Would it be very naughty to tell DDs before DP comes home????

I need to tell more people

I told my Mum who just tutted at the cost, but honestly if we can afford it then it doesn't matter does it?

Just seen the photo.

Aw!!!!!!!!!!!!! My heart lurched.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 11/01/2008 18:06

Don't forget to get insurance.

serendippity · 11/01/2008 18:10

I have a Weimaraner! I remember whe he bought him home 2 years ago, he used to fall asleep over my shoulder, just like a baby
He's now a boisterous cheeky 2yr old boy.
1 tip- be frim, firm, firm from day one! they are adorable when pups but grow huge very quickly and can be pretty dominent. Bitches are easier tho. Weimaraners have the most wonderful personalitys, enjoy

MrsSpoon · 12/01/2008 23:41

Aaah, she's gorgeous!

Beauregard · 12/01/2008 23:43

omg she is gorgeous

bratnav · 14/01/2008 09:32

Well she is here, I have never had a puppy before, only adult dogs. DP wasn't joking when he said it was as hard as having a new baby in the house, although obviously easier on the nipples!

She is beautiful, 81/2 weeks old, we have managed so far to train her to sit, lie down and go to her bed, Serendippity you are right, firmness seems to be the order of the day, I can't stop cuddling her though!

Sooo happy, I love my Amelie puppy

OP posts:
MummyPenguin · 14/01/2008 14:54

She's gorgeous. I think you did right to go for a bitch, especially with kids. Dogs are great too, but in my experience I've found bitches generally easier to train, more responsive and less prone to mass destruction! Can I be very rude and enquire how much you paid for her? Just out of nosiness? They're about £800 aren't they? My Labrador was £400, that was nearly 5 years ago, and my Golden Retriever, nearly 4 years ago was £450.

bratnav · 14/01/2008 16:02

Um, we paid £700 for her (don't tell my parents they will kill me!)

OP posts:
MummyPenguin · 15/01/2008 08:20

I'm probably stating the obvious, but make sure you get her insured! With the combined cost of my two, I often suddenly realise the amount of money I've got at the end of two leads!

serendippity · 15/01/2008 22:00

Spook cost £750!
I know, he was Sooooo adorable all legs and ears when we got him Not easy to be firm with something so cute but vital believe me. Spook would have been a NIGHTMARE, he was an awful mouther and was very dominent. Gorgeous as a puppy, but 40k grown dog..beliefe me, hell.
My fiancee and i have had more rows about firmness with this dog than we have about dd from day one, and let me tell you dp was right! You kind of have to project into the future, and imagine your beautiful girl fully grown and trying to teach you who's boss!
Having a huge personality is a wonderful trait of a weimy and maybe part of the reason you got her, i know it was with Spook, but also one that needs a firm hand, so you can get the best of your dog...without the potential stress
Very ahppy for you, do enjoy your gorgous sounding baby
Oh and sorry if i make absoutly no sense at all, i've been through it but it doesn't make me any less crap at expressing myslef!
