put dog to sleep? :(

i’m really struggling with if we should put our 12 year old springer spaniel who we adore to sleep! she’s had arthritis for a few years in her back legs which we’ve managed through supliments (you move) & metacam, low weight & regular walks however, this last month we’ve noted a stark deterioration in her mobility e.g struggling to get up from laying down, shaking, trembling limbs in sitting & standing, falling over her & groaning … she can now barely tolerate a 10 minute walk on grass & pays for it terribly by groaning for the rest of the day.

we took her to the vet who prescribed paracetamol & gabapentin a week ago but it’s not working she’s still groaning (less often but still apparent when she moves) the vet stated she wasn’t the worse she’d seen but accepted that put to sleep would be considered if her quality of life was decreased … we live in a bungalow so stairs haven’t been an issue but don’t think she’d manage. vet stated her arthritis is now in her front legs as well as her back & possibly in her spine so she can’t compensate for her back legs anywhere anymore.

she’s still eating & drinking, still continent but struggling to get down to do her business so sometimes weeing on her back legs … when she’s good, she’s good (such as when husband gets lead out or when greeting people.. she spins & gets so excited) but that’s only 10 minutes or so of her day the rest are spent laid out struggling ….

it’s such a hard decision we love this dog to pieces but i can’t see her suffer … it’s so awful when it’s their mobility when the rest of her is healthy & well.

any advice would be appreciated xx

I would - sooner rather than later. Sad. We waited too long with a much beloved dog as my husband couldn’t bear to have him put to sleep. Poor dog was in a terrible state for the last few weeks Sad.

It would have been so much better if we’d gone before he’d become so poorly that was inevitable.

Ask your vet if Librela may be suitable for your dog. It is a new treatment and can give some severely arthritic dogs a new lease of life. It is really a game changer for many dogs. However if this doesn't help I agree it may be time to consider euthanasia OP.

If you can't get the pain under control, it's the kindest thing to do x

ifyouturnonthelight · 08/04/2022 11:11

We're putting our nearly 13 year old down tonight for the exact reasons. He's just not happy and has no quality of life now, he's still eating and drinking but he's a hoover and it would be a cold day in hell before he stops eating.

FiveShelties · 08/04/2022 11:13

Someone said to me to do it a week early rather than a day late.

It is the last thing we do for a much loved pet but it is hard, so very hard.

Loopylisa1991oxo · 08/04/2022 12:00

thank you all so much for your replies, i think it’s given me some reassurance that we are doing the right thing - the pain is evidently not under control all the time which is heartbreaking. of course if the vet thinks there is more we could do i would try, but in my heart of hearts i think she’s possibly too far gone with her arthritis being global :( devastated …. @ifyouturnonthelight i’m so sorry about your dear dog wishing him/her a smooth journey across the rainbow bridge ❤️

I was going to suggest this However if you vet doesn’t think it’s a good idea then I agree that it might be time to say goodbye

@ifyouturnonthelight and @Loopylisa1991oxo

So sorry for both of you.

notacooldad · 08/04/2022 12:07

I cant answer for you but I'm so sorry it's nearly your dogs time.
Please if you can be there when she goes.
My dad ran out crying and walked aimlessly for miles when his dog had to go but he still beats himself up that he walked out. His mind was just in a fog but he deeply regrets it years later.

Loopylisa1991oxo · 09/04/2022 09:47

thank you for all your kind words. the dog has deteriorated further over night to the point where she is crying not just groaning despite all her pain medication :( absolutely heartbroken to say she’s booked in today to be put to sleep … myself & my husband will be there all the way with her… as hard as it is she deserves that from us, my 6 year old is heartbroken as she’s an only child & this dog has been her sibling …. also bad timing as she’s recovering from surgery so i’m trying not to upset her so much but make sure she’s well informed so she can say goodbye.

I'm so sorry but I think this is the right thing to do.

Toddlerteaplease · 09/04/2022 09:56

So sorry, but yes it sounds like the right thing. Can you get a kit to take some paw prints? Think you can buy the ink less ones in craft shops. Then you can have jewellery or key rings made with them on. I have a silver key ring with my cats prints on and it really helped.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 09/04/2022 10:03

It is the hardest thing but the best thing. A last heartbreaking act of love.

She will only know release from the pain and she will pass it to you for a while to carry.

Sorry - I don’t know what happened there. Sad

A pet shaped hole is the emptiest of spaces.

You are doing your best by her. 💙 🐾 🐾 x

I’m so so sorry, it’s so hard xx

Duchess379 · 09/04/2022 18:39

I'd put little floof to sleep. It's so hard - I had to make this decision for my 13yr old chihuahua who had heart failure. That morning, I knew it was time. It's so hard & you're going to feel very sad for a while, but it's honestly the best thing to do. Big hugs 🥺🐾💕

@Loopylisa1991oxo - ah bless you. Such a hard thing to do but sounds like it was totally the right decision.

Because deterioration is incremental it's sometimes difficult to appreciate how much a dog is suffering. With the clarity of hindsight I look back in horror at how I kept my old Labrador going for much longer than I should have done. Wish I'd had your courage. You did right by your girl Thanks

Guineapiggiesmalls · 09/04/2022 19:21

I’m very sorry

I was in your position a year ago, having said goodbye to our beloved dog. It took time, but I’m now proud that we were able to make the right decision for her, at the right time, despite it being agony for us. It sounds like your dog was very loved, and you were acting absolutely in her interests Flowers
