Dalmation sharing the bed

My wife prefers our new puppy to sleep on the bed.I think better he has a dog bed on the floor. We already share with an old Shitzu. I'd like to buy two beds in the hope of getting more foot room with the Shitzu in his own bed on the floor but I'm not confident this will happen. We already have two beds downstairs. We're not interested in crates.Should I just give in as per usual she payed for the dog.Im ok with training and distance walking but am generally nervous about our new arrival introducing him to our occasionally grumpy old shitzu. Also what food is best to start we're hearing different opinions.Any advice please.

How is it going to work when he's not a puppy, can't see anyone getting much sleep then, apart from him!

My dog sleeps on the bed but is rather smaller than a Dalmatian...

We haven't picked him up yet but he will be four months old.Obviously when he's bigger I'll wean him off the bed if wife gets her way but I really don't want this to happen in the first place. We have always had small breeds but took on a rescue chocolate lab who decided one day that he wanted the bed too but luckily next day he was back on the floor .

Don't let him on and then wean him off. Either let it happen or don't but the other is creating a rod for your own back.

He might not even want to get on the bed. My dog only rarely comes up and although he is huge, he curls up very small. My previous smaller dog kind of just melted in somewhere so it won't cause much hassle if you do chose to let him.

Thanks I didn't think of that .I imagined him full length of course they curl up.But I think foot room will be the big issue also.

Ok, full disclosure, I have cats sleep on our bed with me. But no way would I let a dalmation sleep on my bed!! With two people and another dog, no way!

I'm excited that you're getting a Dalmatian, have either of you owned one before?

I have 4 and work for a Dalmatian rescue in my spare time.
They are the most loving and affectionate dogs but they don't come up the stairs in our Home.
You need a bloody good vacuum cleaner, they shed the most ridiculous amount of hair (known as Dally glitter in the Dalmatian world).

Good luck, would love to know how you get on with your new addition

Thanks were really excited too and I'm looking forward to the long walks.I've researched alot about them so I'm pretty much prepared.I'll keep an update I'm sure they'll be tons to write about.Off to work now apologise can't respond rest of day

I have a 110 pound golden retriever who sleeps on the bed . He curls up which is a good thing but curls up at the bottom of the bed on my side so I basically sleep diagonal these days 😂.

I know you can't reply because you're at work. Mine have x2 20 mins walks a day. They are happy with that. They love to snuggle and curl up on the sofa.
None of ours smile, always wanted a smiley Dally. They are terrible thieves, we've had a few Sunday dinners minus the meat because they've worked together to get it off the side (pushed right far back Confused).
They are the best dogs, ignore the comments saying "too aggressive, difficult to train, hyper". Its all bollocks.

Put the dog bed next to your bed, raise it if you want. But sharing a bed with a Dalmatian 😱
You’ll need to get 2 beds! And I do allow my dog in the bed but he is 5kg!

Thanks. We have a lot of scenic places near us so enjoy the long walks but it's nice to know if tired can quickly run round the block and not have to do the two hours a day.I have been concerned about the negatives I've seen but all the Dalmations i've come across have been great on the lead and friendly .

Yep that's the plan ...the bed next to the bed..not separate bedsGrin

My wife wants him on the bed because of the fact he slept with his brothers and sisters for four months and will miss the warmth and closeness. But I'm going with the fact he may not want to and encourage the sleeping in his own bed.Great to see the enthusiasm for Dalmations it really has helped thanks.
