Em, good luck?😂

I’d not leave them unsupervised till you are sure the little ones won’t get hurt. It might go well or it might take nearly a year like mine. I only started letting the be together unsupervised after a few months and they still have the odd scrap but mostly tolerate/ignore each other.

I can’t imagine you will be popular with your older cat OP, good luck I hope it works out ok.

Don’t?

Very, very slowly. Keep the kittens totally separate to give them time to take on the smell of the house and for them all to get used to one another's smells - I would suggest for at least 10 days. Let your older cat see them very briefly at first, and gradually increase the viewing window. Do not leave them unsupervised even briefly until you are 100% confident they will tolerate each other.

A Feliway diffuser may help them feel more comfortable.

Give your adult cat lots of attention and treats.

I know it's hugely unpopular on MN but I've introduced plenty of "strange" cats and I've never done any of this scent-swapping, "slowly slowly" business.

Kitten comes in and is held by someone while other cats have a good sniff. Kitten is then placed on the floor and that's about it Wink

We've never had fights or disagreements or any issues whatsoever. The odd hiss and swipe but that's normal where multiple animals of any kind live together - it's rare that they'll always get on 100% of the time.

I currently have three cats of varying ages - two boys and a girl and we've never had a single problem. Youngest is now two and the oldest is seven next month.

Make sure the older cat has a safe place away from the kittens.
The good news is you have two- so they’ll annoy each other hopefully

Expect older cat to occasionally clobber them if they are being annoying.
Spoil older cat.
As above ,Feliway
You’ll need extra litters trays 3 and 1 extra
Watch older cat for signs of a UTI

I have always just let them get on with it as well. I can't imagine separating cats for a year!

Confusedteacher · 27/02/2022 08:56

We did scent swapping- stroke the new cat with your hand in a sock (sounds odd but it works!) then leave the sock in a place where the old cat will find it, and vice versa.

Make sure the new cat has a completely separate room for first couple of days. Then let them have a sniff around the house when the old cat isn’t there, and also let the old cat have a look around the kitten’s room.

I’ve also heard feeding them either side of a door is a good idea- they will associate the smell of each other with something nice!

If you can, the advice I've always read is to keep new cats in one room for the first 3 days at least, with their litter, food, water, toys in there (their 'safe room').

Give older cat lots of reassurance and attention.
