New puppy help

Hi guys,

So I have a 2 year old Pomsky ( Pomeranian and husky mix) and on Friday we got our second dog - a little chihuahua puppy.

She has settled in beautifully.. except the from the night time. I know nights are hard for pups but when I had my first dog it was lockdown so I could take an early morning nap and get through the day. I can't do that this time round.

I've currently had about 4 hours sleep and I now have to go to work (don't worry pup is not being left alone all day).

Eventually, when she can go through the night without needing the toilet, she will be able to just roam around our bedroom and sleep in there with my other dog. At the moment we have this mesh gate across our en suite and she's in there. Problem is she cries... a lot. If I put my second dog in there she settles fine as she doesn't want to be alone. Problem is my second dog then gets super restless as he doesn't want to be in there and spends his time trying to escape.

Any ideas of what I could do? Tips welcome!

Puppy proof the bedroom and let her roam around.
Set an alarm in the middle of the night to toilet her, if she’s not already woken you up.

I had exactly the same issue about 3 weeks ago! I ended up getting a small pen - not a crate, like small hexagonal material thing with mesh across the top. I pop my pup in there next to the bed and within a week he was sleeping through. My other chihuahua just free roams the bedroom at night so it means she doesn't get bothered either. The first few nights in the pen if he whimpered I would just pop my hand in the top or up against the mesh and it instantly soothed him to just know he wasn't alone.
It's not perfect - but I wasn't getting any sleep for the crying, which was obviously awful for him too.

I'd be really interested in how your two are getting along so well that you can leave them! Mine just want to playfight ALL the time and one of them always gets hurt. I know they have to find out whose boss - but I think they have done that by now, this seems to just be that the older dog doesn't know her strength sometimes and the little one is a savage little pup! I don't know whether I should discourage or leave them to it!

Does that mean you’re not taking pup out to wee in the night? Won’t that get in the way of toilet training?

He has a puppy pad in there at night if he needs it, but my partner takes him out when he comes to bed about 4 hours after me and then I'm up 4 hours later so he hasn't needed it more than a handful of times. Before the pen, he would literally not settle for more than an hour at a time and not at all in a different room

They get along great. They do play fight but only for 20 mins or so at a time and then they get fed up. If the pup keeps going the older one jumps onto the sofa or goes upstairs where she can't get to so he can have some peace.

She seems to have big bursts of energy and then settle down for a couple of hours.

I would say let them play/fight it out. The more you keep them apart the more of a novelty they are to each other and they won't stop! They'll soon work out how to get along Smile
