Hi all,

So we had 2 male Guinea Pigs in the garden. They’d lived together since we got them and no issues. Really large hutch with a run, lots of things for them to do inside it, kept clean, warm and secure.
We recently noticed holes coming from a neighbours side of the fence where they have a DIY veg patch right beside our fence and one of our piggies suddenly was found passed in the hutch. We couldn’t work out at first why as no signs of illness etc but today we noticed 3 rats coming from their garden into ours, had got into the hutch and started (horrified!) panicking that is what had killed him with rats being diggers. We raced outside to scare them off and we’ve now brought the other one inside; but it’s only to an indoor cage and now I’m overrun with questions and thoughts.

  • With Guineas being social, we want to get him a companion. How do we do that safely, would he accept another male?
  • Panicking he’s been infected by something off the rats as also have a toddler!
  • How do you make an indoor set up more liveable / exciting when he’s been used to having so much space?
What do your indoor set ups look like?

Thank you - I feel absolutely awful

Aw @sugaryouth20 I can sympathize so much - one of our guinea pigs passed away
suddenly last summer 💝 I don't have a lot of experience but yes please do try and get another piggie - our remaining pig became a new man when we introduced a new friend after the other one died! We got ours from a guinea pig rescue where they take the time to attempt to bond your piggie with another suitable one. Each rescue probably has their own rules but ours wouldn't take our piggie until 2 weeks after the other one died, to reduce any chance of potential infection. Our piggies have always been indoors, and I have a ferplast rabbit 40 cage which is bigger than the minimum size, plus a separate run. It really depends on what space you have. If you can give them space to run around on the floor that can compensate a little.

If you have time, look up the website Guinea pig forum and search for bereavement, it has lots of tips for helping your remaining piggy to get through bereavement.

HTH a bit 💐
