I don't know really why I am posting but I feel so upset and powerless. He is 14 and a large dog (lurcher x collie) so has had a good innings as they say but he was so healthy and happy until the last few months. He had this persistent cough and the vet diagnosed a heart murmur and put him on frusadale (which is a diaretic) and something else for his arthritus. The diuretic worked and his cough stopped almost entirely but now vet says he has an irregular heartbeat and has cut down the diuretics because they might have been causing it. He is now coughing again and looking very listless. I want to take him back to the vets but it just costs so much. Spent £300 in the last 2 weeks, money we can ill afford.

I also dislike our vet - she falls into the same catergory of 'professional' that dentists and mechanics fall into ie you have to believe what they say because you know nothing of the field but deep down suspect that they are just out to fleece you for all you're worth... Do you know what I mean? While we were there last time she looked in his ears (a bit grubby but not bothering him) and decided to open a packet of ear drops without even asking me and gave him a dose. We had to pay £21 for this small bottle, the contents of which I have not used as I don't think the dog needs it. After hearing his irregular heartbeat, she said he needed an ECG (at a mere £75) - what is the point of an ECG? All it tells you is that there is arrhythmia, surely?

What should I do? Want to take him to another vet but ours is exactly opposite our house and I bump into her all the time. Afraid to take him again today in case she makes me spend even more money on unecessary treatments. Should I just up the dose of diuretic to what it was before? Help!

in case I don't get to check in on mumsnet in the next few days - just to wish you and your dog well this Christmas,Scarlet - have been thinking of him.

any news scarlet ? have been away with in laws since Christmas Eve, just back and was wondering how your boy was getting on.Hope all is well.

Thank you for all your wonderful advice and support - wish I'd checked this earlier but haven't been on mumsnet for ages with Xmas and everything.

Just wanted to say that he is still with us, though coughing at night a lot. On xmas eve vet tried to sell us cough pills at about £100 - then when she saw my face said we could ALTERNATIVELY buy codeine linctus over the counter... This seems to work. He hates the taste but if he's bad in the evening or if he wakes me up in the night, I give him a dose and it knocks him out so we all get a better night's sleep.

Beautifulgirls - he's on 2 x 2 frusadale daily and 10mg benazacare (half tablet). He is quite a tall dog - collie lurcher cross - and weighs 26kg. He has lost weight since all this happened and I am wondering whether that's something we should moniter? He was 28kg or thereabouts for years but I weighed him today and he's a bit over 26kg. He is eating less (ie only eating the meat and leaving behind the majority of the biscuits) but he seems quite cheerful in the day.

The vet said he probably would not die of a heart attack or in his sleep and that we would have to decide when the time was right. Friends who use the same vet told me that she is very 'pro-life' which was a nice way, they admitted, of her keeping the money flowing in for as long as possible. They had a very old dog who in hindsight they wished they'd put down earlier, but vet kept saying she was fine etc. What I am basically saying is I don't trust her to tell us when the time is right. Can anyone help with, I don't know, a check list of things to help us make our decision?

Thank you all once again - it really helped me before xmas when things were really bad.

hello Scarlet - so glad you have reported back - I thought about your dog over the past few weeks - am pleased he is still with you and seems comparatively ok. I think when the time comes you will know inside - especially as you sound very close and in tune with him. I think once he stops drinking, eating, seems to have lost his enthusiasm and usual way of being, that will probably be a signal. Really hope her hangs on though in a good state ! The vet trying to charge £100 the the cough stuff is appalling.
