Pet Insurance

My dh and I have just bought a puppy (not living with us yet). We want to get pet insurance because we don't want to find ourselves in a situation where we can't afford to pay for necessary treatment. However its a complete minefield. I've grown up with dogs but I've never owned a dog as an adult and my parents have never had pet insurance. Help! Does anyone have recommendations? Is it worth it? It seems that to have full cover we are looking at nearly £40 per month. That's all singing all dancing insurance and it is a fairly large breed. On top of that a health plan for £20 per month and then food and before I know it we're looking at almost £100 per month. How do people afford this? We have 2 incomes 1 full time 1 part time. I did look at costs before buying a puppy but seeing it all now mounting up is beginning to make me sweat 😣. I've read that once you get pet insurance it generally doubles every 5 years.

Unless you have a few £k in readily get-at-able savings that you don't mind spending at the vet, then you do need insurance.

The ones most recommended on MN are PetPlan (most vets will deal directly with them) and BoughtByMany. It's highly advisable to get one with lifetime cover (premiums may go up, but you'll still get cover) and with no per-condition limits. Look for at least £7k cover.

And yes, dogs are expensive. £40 pcm for insurance for a large breed sounds reasonable, and £20 for a vet flea/wormer/periodic check up is at the lower end

It costs us a fortune to have a dog but we have him instead of expensive hobbies.

We use bought by many for insurance. It's a lifetime policy.

I would definitely get insurance unless you have savings. Costs add up VERY quickly with vets!
