Oh, LisaLisa, how sad. Very heart-wrenching.

I didn't realise that they could get fly strike at this time of year. was it because she was disabled, do you think?

lucykate · 03/12/2007 12:38

don't feel guilty for not staying with nibbles, i stayed with one of our cats, well, it was dh's family cat who had come to live with us and she was 19 years old, he was too upset so i went in with her. nibbles will have been fine, as far as they are concerned, they are just having an injection and it's all over very quickly and painlessly, it was more traumatic for me than the cat, hth, x.

poor you...I can understand the not wanting another pet bit - my lovely cat died some years ago, he'd been quite poorly before and then seemed much recovered and just dropped dead one night - I feel I can never replace him.

WendyWeber · 03/12/2007 12:44

I'm sure the vet only asked you to leave because you were so upset already, lisalisa - he will have given her an injection as soon as you left and she will have slipped peacefully away.

You did your best for her

PestohohohoMonster · 03/12/2007 12:47

So sorry for you Lisa. I really feel for you. Our pet hamster died a year ago on the 8th December and I still haven't got over his loss. Being a SAHM, he was a real companion to me and I truly loved him as one of our family. We did give him a decent funeral and have buried him in the garden. But, I am like you, I don't feel I could ever have another one again. It is truly truly upsetting.
You must just remind yourself that you did give her the very best life she could have had.

mistypeaks · 03/12/2007 12:47

Sorry for you lisa. Vets are very very kind. He would have noticed how distressed you were and decided to spare you any further upset. Sometimes it is better to say your goodbyes when your pet is still awake and responsive. He won't have dumped her I promise. He sounds like he cared for you as well as nibbles.
xx

Like Wendy said the vet would have given her an injection and she would have passed away peacefully as you were already upset the vet probably didn't want to cause more upset. Rabbits are such wonderful pets but seeing then passing away is incerdably painful.

lucykate · 03/12/2007 12:50

the vet will have asked you to leave as he will have seen how upset you were and was worried that nibbles seeing you like that may upset or unsettle her too, he will have just wanted to keep nibbles calm

aww lisa so sorry to hear this and the pain you are going through

I lost a rabbit when I was about 7 as it had paralysis too, I was devastated at the time but my parents bought me a tiny baby rabbit even though I said I didn't want one but I did love it.

Losing a pet is really tough but you have to remember that their loves are shorted than ours it's just the way it is, as long as you give them the best of care when they are with you and allow them a dignified and pain free death you are doing your bit.

I used to work in a vets and have seen a few animals out to sleep and also held my 15 year old dog when he was put down. It is not distressing at all very calm and peaceful they just drift off to sleep.

You have done your best for her you gave her a fighting chance x

shinyhappytonks · 06/12/2007 18:29

So sorry to hear lisa.

I, too have lost a rabbit to fly strike. My beloved girl hurt her leg during the day (we were out) and by the time i saw her at night she was already infected . I agree that it is the most horrible things to have to deal with - and it stayed with me for a long time. Swore blind that i wouldn't have anymore (cried for days with the guilt and worry about how i had let her down) - but i now have two beautiful rabbits that i love dearly (took over a year)

It is very early days yet, and the pain will subside. Try to remember the good times and the other images will gradually fade.

stillaslowreader · 06/12/2007 18:56

Our ancient rabbit was put to sleep last week- cancer. Her twin sister died earlier in the summer and she had not been happy since. The vet put local anaesthetic on her ear and then injected the same thing that they use to put them under for surgery into a vein in her ear. She did not even twitch, she just went heavy and that was that.

I cried so much they had to put me in a seperate room before I could drive home.

Madoldcatlady · 06/12/2007 19:10

We lost a lovely rabbit to fly strike too.

I was distressed like you that she could have been suffering for days before we noticed but the vet assured me that it could take just hours for the eggs to hatch and take hold so try not to torture yourself too much.
