Any snake owners? 🐍

My 12 yr old is desperate for a snake! He mentions it occasionally in the past year but has ramped it up and has not stopped for the past 3 days since his best mate got a corn snake recently!

He has been researching a milk snake.

I’m happy for him to have one but we just can’t convince his dad!! Who frustratingly has 3 snakes as a child and in to his teens.

He thinks it’ll be too tricky to manage as we like to go on lots of weekends away and some longer holidays in the year. He thinks it’ll be too tying, which I can understand.

Can i have some real life experiences from snake owners please?

Ds got a snake for his second birthday!! His older db had one. Obviously I was the main carer!! Corn snakes are the easiest to handle for dc... Elvis is 11 now!!
Ds 6 loves it and thought a tractor would give it some amusement! - seems to!!

Milk snakes are beautiful💕 Most reptile shops offer boarding, so should be happy to care for your animal while you're away. Their fees are usually very affordable.

I have an African House Snake.
They are not tying at all. Fill water, feed, go away for a few days. Come back and feed.

Not like dogs that need constant attention or cats that need litter changing daily.

They’re not really tying, we can go away and leave our corn snake for 2 weeks no issue.

They aren’t particularly fun as a pet though, you have to be confident holding them as they can be very quick, and that’s about all they do really.

The expenses add up, they can live for 10years and I would worry he would lose interest quickly.

I used to ‘snakesit’ a friend’s pair of corns when she went on holiday. Lovely creatures, with real personalities!

Once you get snakes there’s a kind of a network, so you never struggle to find people to take them if you go away. The reptile forums are excellent (or they used to be, I haven’t been on for years).

We have snakes….it’s hard to just have one as they are kind of addictive 😬.

Our corn snake is the easiest but takes up the most space (he’s 5ft long).

Ball pythons are my favourite but are a bit more tricky to look after, they are easy to handle as they are generally quite slow and lazy.

They can live a lot longer than 10 years, some living 20 years.

They are much easier than most pets as they can be left for a week or even 2 (mine feed once every 2 weeks). We are going away tomorrow for a week, I will feed the snakes tonight and they will then sleep most of next week 🤣.

We have a corn snake, DS wore me down last autumn!
I have to say he's the easiest creature in the house, very chill, fed once a week, not disruptive, likes to be handled. He is a bit of
An escape artist so not one you can sit watching the tv with.

We're away end of next week for 10 days, plan is to feed him before we go and then he's staying with MIL, I don't really want him in the house with the cats unattended (we have a cat sitter who comes in but she's not keen on feeding the snake) but if MIL had said no then the reptile place we got him from does holiday boarding.

Watching a snake shed it's old skin is mesmerising!! Dc take them into school. Very educational. Even took snakes in when ds was in nursery. Of the 2 classes only 1 dc didn't hold it. Even when I brought the big one I had kept under my chair out!!
Ime do not let a snake onto your car steering wheel...
