a few questions about dogs

The Yorkie(pic on profile) that we are minding till we find the owner is still at our house. I've brought him to the vet to see if he's been chipped but no luck, I've looked on lostandfound.ie but no report of him missing, I've been in touch with the police but nothing there either and I've also asked everyone in the village if they recognise him. I'm reluctant to put up posters because I've been told that often people use found posters to either get a pedigree dog to sell on or get dogs for dog fighting.

I have completely fallen in love with him (now that I've given him a bath) and so had dd and ds. It's like living in limbo though because I don't know when or if we'll find his owner. We had talked about getting a dog recently and dh was 50/50 about it. He now feels hoodwinked because he hadn't agreed to it and now suddenly there's a dog in the house. He's not very affectionate with animals which I'm sure comes from his parents. (His dad was sent down to the sea to drown a puppy in a bag when he was 8((it escaped)) and when his mum's brother didn't feed his rabbits their father had them killed and made into a pair of rabbit skin gloves for his mum )
Anyway this dog would be perfect for our family if we didn't find his real home. He's very easy, friendly with children, doesn't yap, is house trained and is very sweet and affectionate.

His unpleasant habits are: if he's very excited or nervous he does a tiny wee, he seems very keen on his willy and often licks it when you're petting him which is very offputting and he gets sick if he travels in the car. So my questions are can I do anything about the wees when excited and the car sickness and also is the willy obsession normal or is there something I can do to stop him?

quickdraw...any news? No news is good news!

Yippee! He's ours! His probation was up yesterday and no call.
I brought him to the vet yesterday morning to ask about neuterting etc. She examined him and he still has his puppy teeth so is more likely to be about 11 months.
I've now taught him to sit, lie down and stay on command.

Oh hooray hooray! I'm sure you will have a fabulous time together. I'm v jealous!! Has DH come round to the idea??

I saw your original thread when you first found him and have only just spotted this one! I don't normally like yorkies but I have to say, he's really cute!! It sounds like he's landed on his feet with you - I'm sure your DH will come round!! You might want to think about getting him an i.d chip yourself just in case he might be a bit prone to bolting. Enjoy your new dog!

Car sickness - of the 4 family dogs we've had since I was 5, only one got car sick. It wasn't flashing scenery either. And the travel sickness medications from the vet didn't work with her - she either threw up before we started out or ended up completely knocked out - which is no good if you just want to travel a few miles to go on a nice walk (and, yes, she would throw up within 5 mins usually).

The thing that sorted her out was having some of my travel sickness medicine. I have no idea what it was called, but I know it was horrid, and I can vividly remember, aged 5 or 6, having 1/2 tsp (I used to get really bad travel sickness) and the dog getting 2 tsp (I was really happy at this) - she couldn't even eat her favorite treats after this as it was so disgusting. However, it cured both of us - she became able to travel without having it - although very occasionally she needed watching still. I'm now OK most of the time as long as I don't try reading, and ideally sit in the front of the car.

Therefore, try the vets for solutions to start with, if these don't work, look for children's travel sickness options in the pharmacy!

Dh has definitely come round. He's much softer towards him now and although he won't let him on his knee he's very kind to him.
Scruff was due to be chipped yesterday morning but he was such a wimp about his vaccinations the vet said that she would pull baby teeth, chip him and give his second vaccination all while he was under for his neutering.
Thanks for thinking of us everyone.

Thanks for the info on the travel sickness mistlethrush. He seems to be getting better with it but I haven't taking him on many journeys to test him. If it keeps happening I'll definitely ask the vet about the medicine you were talking about as it would be nice to be able to take him on trips.
We're very lucky that we have a 50 acre parkland beside our house that goes all the way down to the sea but we do a lot of hill walking at the weekends and it would be nice to take him with us.

Sounds like he is going to have a lovely life. Such a happy outcome.

mistlethrush · 05/12/2007 10:22

Good luck with him!

quickdrawmcgraw · 05/12/2007 11:37

peggotty how could you not like Yorkies?! actually I used to not like small dogs either as we had grown up with German shepherds but I can definitely see the appeal of small poos and small amount of mud on paws now.
I've added an even cuter picture on my profile of him now relaxing with my niece this morning.

It's happened hasn't it? I've turned into a pet bore.

I used to dislike Yorkies, purely because they are often dressed in a bow, overgroomed and owned by fussy types who treat them like children etc. But then I got to know the one owned by my dad's girlfriend (!) and now I realise they are very clever dogs, typical brave-hearted terriers.
