Does anyone have a giant millipede?

I handled one today [proud]
I'm not an insect lover (that is an understatement) but these are lovely, and acc to the woman, virtually indestructible. And clean. Don't smell. They have few needs. They eat semi-off veg peelings. You mist their tank once a day with a water sprayer thingy. They need to be warmish, I suppose, but nothing really hot, and they don't like light. They like leaf litter. They're nice to handle.
Is there a catch? I am thinking of getting a couple.

you been to butterfly world?

they poo if you squeeze them, don;t they?

Prefer something a bit more cuddly meself

I handled one once - it felt like a sot toothbrush walking on me. I was fascinated and would happily have bought one if the boys had been interested. I think the guy said they cost about £18 each? As you say - pretty easy to look after (at least that's what he said).

Prunie · 20/11/2007 23:09

Yes
I dunno about poo. Everything poos. Better millipede poo than guinea pig poo and wee and stinky stuff and snot and saliva.
Thanks for the reply btw

eeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwww

Prunie · 20/11/2007 23:10

Yay fortyplus, that was my impression as well
They are really sturdy, those legs...I thought they would break (then realised that if they did, the creature wouldn't really have been around for god knows how many gazillion years).

You could probably break a few off and it wouldn't notice

pointydog · 20/11/2007 23:12

we've done The Handling a few times. The poo comment just sticks in my mind.

fortyplus · 20/11/2007 23:13

Actually I used to have 2 horses - they really are crap pets!

Prunie · 20/11/2007 23:14

Have you Handled the...

cockroach?

I demurred.

I refused to hold the tarantula - I don't mind spiders but I draw the line at that!

Prunie · 20/11/2007 23:17

Yes, me too.
She tried to tell me they weren't scary.
I said, they don't scare me, they repulse me.
I feel like they shouldn't exist somehow.

I really hate cockroaches so no, I wouldn;'t hold one.

Linnet · 20/11/2007 23:24

My dd is nagging us for a pet and dh has suggested a giant millipede. We have also handled one once at a science centre, also held the hissing cockroaches.

I'm trying to suggest cuddly things but dh keeps hoping for a giant millipede, maybe I should get him one for christmas, lol

pointydog · 20/11/2007 23:25

on teh plus side they must have quite a short lifespan

Prunie · 20/11/2007 23:29

Linnet, they look like comparatively work-free pets
This is what's attracting me tbh
Compare with gerbils or whatever that need cleaning out and big cages and enough exercise and they smell
And so...smooth and...unthreatening

2 to 7 years apparently

pointydog · 20/11/2007 23:31

no way!

leave the window open to create a slight chill. That'll see it off well before 7.

You say such hurtful things!

If you play one more then I'll do one more before bed (work tomorrow) then you'll have ages to work out something evil! I've got rubbish letters this time!
