Any experience of raising call duck?

My DD was enchanted by a documentary and begged me again and again for a small-size, white coloured, quacking call duck. But I am extremely not sure our house can accommodate it.

My understanding is the call duck should be raised in door, right? I heard how terrible the fox is.

Do I need a big big house? (Check my pocket and sigh)

How to deal with its dropping?

Is it really loud?

Can I get its food from market?

Is call duck clever to understand its owner? How attached is it to owner? Is it vigilant to stranger?

Sorry I just have a lot of questions.Sad

With any pet you need to be sure that you want it as much if not more than your children. Call ducks live for ten years. It’s you who is going to responsible for this pet, it’s you who will be ultimately cleaning up after it, feeding it, paying for any medical bills and organising care for when you’re away on days out or holidays. This animal only gets one life - don’t get a pet if you’re not 100% committed to giving it good quality of life.

If you do decide to go ahead then there are a few things to consider that are specific to call ducks:
• They’re noisy. Do you have neighbours nearby?
• Ducks are social animals. How many would you have?
• They need access to water. Do you have a pond or some kind of outdoor tub that they could access?

@YelloYelloYello

AwesomeThanks, thanks for these. They are exactly what I need as help. Our family is friendly and welcoming but it's not just about if we love to have one. I concern if the environment is friendly for the duckling.
For example, you mentioned the water- no we don't have a pond in yard.Confused

Yes, very true that having a pet is a long-term commitment.

I will discuss these with DD fully. Thank you!

Do you have close neighbours? Call ducks are cute but they are LOUD.

There are some at the yard where the horse I share lives. They have a huge pen with other ducks, they don't have a pond but do have puddles and tubs of water to splash about in, plus they're let out to run around the fields when people are on the yard. For white ducks they love playing in the mud!

But they are "call" ducks - that call is not neighbour friendly. And they use it a lot. If they would moan about barking dogs, they're not going to like call ducks.

They also shouldn't be kept alone, you would need several.

@bunnygeek Thanks for this reminder. No! One more to add as cons. ConfusedConfusedConfused

I have kept ducks and did hand rear one from tiny in the house.
The poo was unbelievable, they basically do it more or less constantly and they are pretty noisy too. They do need to swim too so you need a pond.
Mine imprinted on me so was ok if was there but wasn’t happy to be left alone, they aren’t solitary animals
I don’t think they are really suitable for most people, we had a stream in our garden and experience of non domestic animals

Thanks @Hoppinggreen for sharing your view. Sad that we are kind family and eager to have one but the environment does not sustain our wish. I am drifting away from this idea now.

Thanks all for your inputs.Daffodil

Yes, with animals it’s about what you can offer them not just the other way around

Maybe if you like the idea of birds indoors you could try cockatiels or budgies.

Cockatiels are gorgeous pets, you really need at least 2 but they are very entertaining and not too destructive. They do poo so it's easier if you have hard floors or washable rugs where they like to perch. I let mine free roam and they mostly stayed round their cage but would sit on door frames etc too
