Just wondered out of curiosity and dd's constant nagging for a pet, if there was a breed of cat that stayed quite small?

You get small dog breeds but are there any cat that stay relatively small and don't get too much bigger than a kitten?

The smallest officially recognised breed of cat is the Singapura. They are around 4-6lb as adults but not all that small. There are some "miniature breeds" like Munchkins but they aren't officially recognised or regulated so may have health issues and there are a lot of criticisms of the whole approach. If you are interested, though, there is a Dwarf Cat Association.

Yah - just buy kittens, throw them in the canal when they get too big and buy some more.

Works for me.

wouldn't they be at risk from being stepped on and horribly squashed

cats are hardly huge though are they?

ok, well I didn't mean stay quite as small as a kitten, but we don't have a huge house and a big cat, I feel, would just be to much for us.

I've been surfing and noticed that a Devon rex is classed as small and other ones that are classed as medium which would probably be ok. Just don't want anything like a Maine Coon cat as they are large.

anyway it's all still hypothetical at the moment, just looking into what cats there are available out there.

thanks though for your help.

Just a nice moggie could still be reasonably small in size. If you want small then the chances are that a female will be more likely to stay smaller than a male cat. If you choose to get a rescue young adult you could see the likely size rather than guessing with a kitten

agree get a female - my male cat is twice the size and weight of his mother

Just have a look at the rehoming centres - they'll have plenty of small adult cats, so you won't have any nasty surprises when your cute little kitten turns out to be part-panther.

Our Battersea moggy is titchy (although she does manage to cram an awful lot of menace into her 2.7 kgs).
