Do house cats rip up carpets

I have a rental flat that I've just put new carpets in

I have some potential new tenants that have a cat, but the flat is on the 4th floor so I guess they'll have to keep it inside

Do house cats tend to scratch up carpets? I'd rent it unfurnished so sofas etc wouldn't matter, but I wonder if they might damage the carpets

Mine doesn’t touch them, I think pet deposits are illegal now (correct me if I’m wrong). But the normal deposit should cover any damage surely? Most cats, especially ones they’ve owned for some time don’t go for carpets

Some do and some don't. I had a cat (who was allowed out) who ripped my stair carpet badly - just one stair he took a fancy too.

I'm guessing that an indoor cat might be more inclined to do it though, whether out of boredom or lack of a favoured outdoor place. My cat leaves the house unscathed, but scratches on short grass, coir doormats and on trees.

I wouldn’t take the risk op. Going by most of the comments, if they don’t go for carpets they’ll go for something else

Ours scratches carpet though you its often edges like stair carpets. Not interested in scratch posts and not keen on garden. If I was in rental and the cat had destroyed the carpets I would expect it to come out of deposit though normally if you trim bits off it doesn't look that bad on a short pile carpet.

I would say best thing would be to ask them and explain you have new carpets and will cat scratch them. If you plan to take from deposit for damage then would make that clear.

I would rent a place out to someone with cats but wouldn't put in expensive carpets.

2 of mine were carpet killers.

My current cat - No.
My previous cat - yes, but only on the stairs.

Apologies about the pet deposit, had no idea it wasn't allowed.
Was it being abused? I would always pay extra to keep my pets.

Hellocatshome · 26/05/2021 16:18

Some do some dont ask for an extra pet deposit to cover any damage caused by the cats.

Mine has wrecked all my carpets. Ignores the scratching posts and uses the carpet. They're not ripped as such but they're all tufted up and look shit due to the cat.
