Think neighbour’s dog has fleas

Hi,

I’ve recently moved into a flat with my indoor cat (the previous occupants didn’t have pets). Next door, is a nice couple with a dog. We have a communal hallway.

Nearly every time I use the hallway, I get bitten by something. And little bite marks appear. I suspect their dog might have fleas. My cat seems fine, I’m on top of it’s flea meds. I seem to be getting bitten though. It’s got to the stage where I’m vacuuming my flat a lot, spraying indorex in my flat to try keep the pest/flea level low. But I think the communal hallway is infested and they keep coming into my flat.

I hate to cause offence, especially as I have no proof their dog has fleas. Is there a polite way to ask them? I feel like I’m battling in vain otherwise.

My friend thinks it would be rude, given I’ve no proof and we are new neighbours. But I’m not sure what to do. 😔

Any advice gratefully appreciated.

Is the communal area carpeted, can you just talk to them and say you keep getting bitten so can you go halves on fumigating the hallway, either do it yourselves or get someone in. Remove any carpets, rugs, doormats, curtains and give it all a good clean.

Thanks @DogsSausages, I think I’ll do that. It’s not carpeted as such, but has a giant mat for wiping feet. Not sure when the area was last cleaned.

It would ditch the mat, if there are eggs you will never get rid off them. I would search for any dead creatures that might be lurking too.
