My mum is severly ill with depression and have a gorgeous 4 year old very excitable dalmatian who needs loads of attention and walks. I walk her when I can but it just isn't fair on her to be shut in a (albeit very large) kitchen and garden all day.Does any one have any ideas how to go about this kind of thing..or even better someone who has a farm or similar who loves spots!!TIA

Hve you checked to see if the dalmation society/breeders club/keenel club or similar rehomes them. Most do and they then get rehomed with a family looking for that breed of dog in the first place.

OldenGoldie · 13/11/2007 19:43

I am sure there will be a rehome group for spotties! These are the best way to go as they have the time and te experience to make sure the match works well - and the facilities to help if it goes wrong.

the last thing you need (I would think) is dealing with someone coming back and saying "she is too excited" than another whos dc develops and allergy.....and so on!

I am sorry to hear about your mother I hope you manage to get your dog sorted soon. OGx

my sis rehomed her dalmation through the breeder. if not there is a specific dalmation rescue depending on your area:

www.britishdalmatianclub.org.uk/

contact them and ask.

Really sorry to hear that.

Have you thought about getting a dog walker?

I have a lovely lady who walks my dog when I am too pregnant to do it, or when dd was tiny, or even just when I'm busy and don't want to. It's the best of both worlds, as I know the lady and absolutely trust her with my dog. She and the dog adore each other. She has a key so can collect the dog and bring her back.

My dog also goes to stay with her when we go on holiday. Not a kennels - she just lives in the house with the lady and her other dog, and 'helps' her walk her other charges.

She also does day-care, where she will collect a dog in the morning and bring it back that evening, having looked after it and walked it all day.

My friend uses this lady on a very long term basis - My friend works but didn't want to re-home her dog when she had to go back to work, so the dog spends all day with the Dog Walker, and comes home in the evenings and weekends.

Might be absolutely not the right thing for you, but thought you might like to know about the option.

exactly right golden oldie ..\i do not want her to be moved around. I want to find her a suitable home with experience and have her enjoy the rest of her life. I have thought I could take her on but I have two cats who are very important to me and a much smaller house than she is used to. Also I dont want to take her on just to realise I cannot cope either.

thanks for both your messgaes I will try those ideas

Thank you broccoli ..my mum is very negative about her at the moment and says she cant cope so although that option sounds fab, when she is in the house she is 'bubbly' and can be destructive when bored.

Good luck - and good on you for not taking the "easy option" there are so many dogs who end up in shelters with behavioural problems because someone thought they could "help". It is far better to take the tougher decision for yourself and end up with the better situation for your dog.

Good luck again

Brocllispears - that does sound good actually - I don't know if it will work for widgypog or not but is certainly something to be aware of!

CarGirl · 13/11/2007 20:03

widgypog so that you do really need to rehome her but they are not a breed for the feint hearted. I love dalmations & red setterd but unfortunately don't own a horse & carriage for them to run alongside too and wear them out!

widgypog · 14/11/2007 08:42

I know car girl they are..thing is we have had two before which have been 'spiritrd' but fine. This one although lovely is so excitable and is a real handful . She needs to run for miles every day. I take her out on our Downs link(an old raailway line) which runs straight for miles. She runs and I cycle. Her behaviour is fine when I have done this but she really does need it EVERY day. Thanks for your kind words.

I am going to call the breeder this morning because I am sure she said if we had problems she would take any dog back, so we will see. She has a big farm in the country so that would be perfect. The only thing is we had her spaid so she wouldnt be able to breed from her. Oh well I'll see how we get on.

hernts..do you mind me asking why your sister rehomed her dalmatian? no worried if you do

OP posts:
widgypog · 14/11/2007 17:54

So I spoke to the breeder and she is going to get a number for me of a dalmatian rescue place. As I suspected she wouldnt want her as she has been spaid.

CarGirl · 14/11/2007 20:43

I'm sure the dalamation place will be able to rehome her - she's not a problem dog and anyone who wants a dalmation must know that they need a lot of exercise.

Alambil · 15/11/2007 09:29

I bet she won't be in there for long - good family pet, if not a "normal" dog that makes it's own entertainment if it gets bored!!

Take comfort in the fact that.... it seems to have no issues (behavioural etc) so should be really straight forward.

So sorry to hear about your mum - hope for all the best

Alambil · 15/11/2007 09:30

"in the fact that it seems" rather!!

hertsnessex · 15/11/2007 12:47

widgypog, a change in circumstancecs forced her to give him up - it wasnt fair that the dog would be left all day, so it was best for him if he went to someone who hadd more time. hope you find a home soon.
