Cat peeing in the bath

Our cat has been really good at using her litter tray ever since we had her, but normally prefers to go outside. Since all the fireworks she's lately started to use the litter tray again but for some reason every morning we find pee in the bath. DP swears its not him (!) and I don't think I've been sleep-peeing so must be the cat. Anyone had any experience of this? How can we get her to stop? DP said we could just keep the bathroom door shut but I'm scared she'll find somewhere else to do it and I don't fancy finding the house smelling of cat pee and not knowing where its coming from!!

The cat is scared.

Whatever you do DO NOT shout at the cat or "wipe it's nose in it" as this will make her worse.

To stop her peeing in the bath, leave a little water in it (not even an inch)

I don't think she'll do it anywhere else BUT make sure the litter tray is always clean and if you have an upstairs put one there too just in case it's because she's not getting back downstairs quick enough.

I'm almost positive that when the fireworks stop she'll stop.

On one more note, it might be worth having her checked by the vets and make sure its not an age related or illness related thing.

Thanks - we thought it was connected to her being scared of the fireworks - they've been going on for weeks now poor thing. Now I think about it when I once forgot to leave her litter tray out ages ago she did a poo in the bath - at least she knows to do it there and not behind the sofa or something! Leaving water in the bath is a good idea, will try that tonight.

She seems happy and healthy during the day and she is only 4 yrs old so will wait till the fireworks stop (if they ever do!) and if she's still doing it will take her to vets.

Thanks for your advice.

I also think she is unsettled due to the fireworks. Is her litter tray somewhere she can hear them? Maybe move it somewhere quieter if possible.

Update - am taking my cat to the vets today because the wee in the bath now has blood in it. Just been looking on web and it seems as though it could be a urinary tract infection - symptoms seem the same, going to litter tray a lot but not actually peeing very much, peeing in other places because associate litter tray with pain. Has anyone has a cat with this? How is it treated?

Hmm my cat was weeing odd places and turns out hes diabetic...is your cat drinking more?
The vet will hopefully sort you outlater today...hope puss gets better soon

I had a cat who had urinary problems who started trying to pee in other places when it became painful (yes even in the bath!)

He was prescribed some medication that he had to have every day and also a special diet food.

Unfortunately it is a problem that doesn't go away

Washersaurus · 14/11/2007 13:51

Oh, and I meant to say the problem is usually brought on as a result of stress.

Our cat had the same problem as Washerwaurus's cat. She had struvite crystals in her bladder, had to take antibiotics for the UTI and since then has been on a special anti-struvite crystal food that we get from the vet's. This was about 5 years ago. She had one more UTI about a year later and has been fine apart from that.

Apparently it's more dangerous in males because their urethras are much narrower and can become blocked.

My sister inherited a cat who did the toilet down the plughole in the bath.
