but we have no idea how much they cost to keep, where to find one and how to find one that I'm not allergic to (I'm allergic to some cats - but not others - wierd I know)....

So do you have a cat?
How much does it cost you a month?
Where did you get it from?

I love my cat.
She is 13 and she is the baby of my ex's mum's cat.
She costs us a bloody fortune!!

Get insurance. Cheaper when they are under 8.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 07/11/2007 19:44

Yes - we were thinking of getting insurance, as the one thing that seems to keep cropping up when talking to people about pets is the cost of vet's fees.

2 years ago our cat needed a scan. £1500.

geordiemacminx · 07/11/2007 19:48

Some cats are lucky some arent. My aunt hsa Maincoons (sp) and has had 2 run over, 1 lost a leg, the other lost its tail. She had insurance, otherwise it would have cost £2000.

I have a moggy from CPL, apart from his yearly injections he has never been to the vets. Food, pouches and biscuits cost about £5 a week, he goes outside, so nothing on litter. Costs us a blo0dy fortune in collars though as the little monster keeps loosing his!!!

Please though, if you are going to get one, get it from the RSPCA or CPL. There are so many older cats that are desparate for homes. Not as cute as kittens but far less hassle.

geordiemacminx · 07/11/2007 19:49

A cat scan sorry that was a lame joke

Katymac · 07/11/2007 19:51

You are less likely to be allergic to a siamese - but they are expensive

Boredveryverybored · 07/11/2007 19:54

I have a persian kitten and she doesn't cost much at all. She's insured which costs me around £10 a month, food around £5 per week, am spending on litter at the moment but thats only until I can get her going outside so temporary.
Finding one is easy enough, it depends what you want. RSPCA and CPL always have plenty of cats needing homes, they're also really good at letting you know the temperament of the cats, whether they're ok with kids etc

Good luck, cats are great

We got ours from a rescue place. I guess you could hand her back if you are allergic ?

Cost was abouot £35 I think, that included some jabs and the big op so she couldn't have babies.

Food is just over £2 for a box of sachets, one per day and about 50p for box of biscuits - need about one a month.

We doo have her insured though - few years ago she had eye operations....

Wood Green Animal shelters in Cambridgeshireclicky hereis the source of our two monsters bundles of joy. There's a lot to be said for giving adult cats a second chance.

sophierosie · 07/11/2007 20:04

I have two lovely cats from the local rescue home. They had jabs and had been spayed.

When we got them the woman at the rescue home couldn't beleive her luck as she said she thought she'd never get rid of them as they were practically feral, however, three years later they are happily slobbing out in front of the fire, and just about tolerate DD!

Go for it - lovely to have a cat in the family! I think it teaches children about respecting others and how to handle animals etc.

I think we spend about £5/week on food, £15 a quarter on flea drops and thats about it!

Surfermum · 07/11/2007 20:06

PMSL @ cat scan!

We got ours from the RSPCA for £45. We had an initial outlay for a cat flap, which IIRC was less than £20 and a litter tray and litter for the first couple of weeks.

I reckon food is around £10-15 per month. I buy supermarket brand tins, but he'll only eat Whiskas dry food - but am currently trying Lidls dry food which he seems to eat.

Pet insurance with Sainsbury's is £6-7 per month.

A good addition to the family I think.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 07/11/2007 20:08

oh we're not too bothered whether it's an adult or a kitten - so as long as we've got a realistic idea of how much it's going to cost each month.......and I'm not allergic to it. Thankfully it's fairly easy for me to find out if I'm allergic to a cat (though not very pleasant) - stroke it and rub my eye - just the once - if 10 minutes later I can't stop scratching my eyes and my nose is dropping like a tap it's a no no.......unfortunately for obvious reasons this test can only be done on one cat at a time. I had a friend in Zim who had 2 cats, one I was allergic to, the other I was fine with (it took ages for us to figure out which was which though LOL).

£2 for a box of food sachets? Not in my shop it isn't!

PositivelyMellow · 08/11/2007 16:39

I have 2. I have a big moggy which I was given as a gift from a friends years ago and I have a Ragdoll boy-cat who I bought a few months ago.

Food-wise I buy a bag of SciencePlan biscuits which lasts a month and then they go through around 3 boxes of food. Which, where I live is usually around £7.70 ish per week.

I have one insured and he is £15.50 per month.

LazyLinePainterJane · 08/11/2007 16:39

sachets of air maybe?

cece · 09/11/2007 17:10

Tesco sachets are £2.14 a box.!

LuckySalem · 10/11/2007 18:44

Go to a CPL centre and do your tests there (make sure you tell them what you're doing first though)

We have 2 cats (mother and son) both from CPL and the 2 of them cost us about £20 per month (not each but together) they have whiskers cat food and lidl dry food and litter.

HOWEVER!! I had to go to the vets with Salem (son) and they gave him all the boosters etc cost me £25 for one trip!! ARGH!

I've not got insurance for them as they are indoor cats and only go into the yard for 1/2 hr a day (they're scared to go any further) and insurance doesn't cover normal costs.

A cat is a lovely animal to have and very rewarding if you get them from a rescue centre. For example when we picked up lucky (mum) she wouldn't come out from under the sofa for 1 week. CPL told us she was a stray when we got her and that we shouldn't take her as she was near feral and dangerous (B'ah)

She was then skitish with us until about 1 month ago (6 months to the day since we had her) and she's now the most loving cat you could ever want.
