This is a bit sad but does anyone know roughly how much it costs to have a cat put down?

We have insurance but I think our cat is too old and won't be covered? Any idea how much it costs?

Hi elle, your insurance wouldn't cover it, I don't think any would. It sort of depends where you are as to how much a vet will charge, it could be about £80 if you want the vet to keep your cat afterwards and deal with his/her body and less if you take him/her home yourself. Is it just old age with your cat or illness?

RoyKinnear · 28/10/2007 17:13

to put to sleep and take body home £20-25
to put to sleep and cremate £35

Here in Surrey £60 to be put to sleep and cremated about £40 if you take the body home

She's old but after three trips to the vets we have finally been told she has cancer. She's not in pain but will starve to death if we don't have her put down because she can no longer eat .
Our insurance says it would cover her as long as she's under 9 years old. She was nine years old this year.

I think when we had to make the painful decision with outr 16 year old cat in March it was about £35-40 for euthanasia and cremation.
Is your cat very poorly? If money is an issue most vets will wait for payment. We had absolutely no cash on us when my cat was put to sleep but the vet just said "don't worry - now is not the time anyway"

  • you're making the right decision elle - very painful and sad though for you all.{{{{{{hug}}}}}}}

Oh what a shame, 9 is not that old either. I don't know if you've had animals put down before or not but it really is incredibly quick. And obviously in your cats' case the kindest thing. Still incredibly hard and upsetting to do though.

NAB3 · 28/10/2007 17:28

I am so sorry.

ellehcim · 28/10/2007 17:32

Its not that the money is an issue - its just that I don't want to have the hassle of talking to the insurance company about it when its upsetting enough anyway.

Since its not horrendously expensive I just can't be bothered to argue with the insurance company about it.

ours was ill with cancer too, it was very quick - he'd been on steroids for a year but he disappeared for 24 hours then came back but wouldn't eat, not even tuna.
