Fleas, at my wits end!

I have 2 cats that up until around 6 months ago, were indoor cats.

They first developed fleas after one of them had a vets stay, around 3 years ago, and I don’t think we’ve ever really been rid of them, I honestly don’t know what to do anymore!

We’ve moved house (unavoidably and not for related reasons) 3 times in those 3 years, and we’ve had professional pest control out twice, we’ve used indorex, we’ve used various other aerosols and sprays and powders.

We vacuum often, we wash their bedding, we wash other soft furnishings, we use Frontline Plus every month without fail, and we’ve just had yet another reappearance of the little blighters. Out of nowhere my OH has picked several off himself in the last few days.

I now have young dc and just can’t risk them suffering, so I’m at the point of considering rehoming. just can’t think of anything else we can try, any advice would be greatly appreciated!

We had an infestation years ago and what worked was the double treatment of an injection called Program (it stops the flea cycle) and a neck treatment. We used Stronghold but I don’t know it’s still made - this was back in the time most people used Frontline but it had just stopped working. Your vets will sell another neck treatment that is different to what you have so far used and will work alongside the Program.

Just picked up that you are using Frontline. It doesn’t work these days. Fleas have just evolved around it.

Yup, Frontline hasn't worked for ages, the only non-prescription flea spot-on that works is Advantage, or get something from your vets.

lunalucie · 14/01/2021 21:14

Definitely get something from the vet that's only available on prescription. I use advantage, frontline just wasn't working on my cats.

Emmas85 · 14/01/2021 21:15

I had the same thing a couple of years ago, I'd tried everything but nothing worked.
I then came across itch pet it's a subscription service which is posted to you. Amazing! It's honestly changed our lives!

lunalucie · 14/01/2021 21:17

Broadline is another good one, you need a prescription for it though.

dementedpixie · 14/01/2021 21:18

Frontline doesn't work in a lot of cases.
Advantage is an OTC one that's supposed to work or get a prescription strength one from the vet

dementedpixie · 14/01/2021 21:19

Broadline has the same flea treatment ingredient as frontline so I'd avoid it too

dementedpixie · 14/01/2021 21:19

Itch pet is also Fipronil based

Shouldershrugger · 14/01/2021 21:22

@nccats use nexguard spectra. Its a bit more expensive, but it works

Shazz20 · 29/01/2021 22:46

Yep! Agreed SmileAdvantage & Indorex saved my life! All the fleas seemed to disappear after that... I also stopped using frontline.
