And it makes me sooooo - anywhere it would, but especially here in an area with loads of toddlers and small children. He left the dog in the doorway of the shop I was in, not tied up, while he drunkenly blundered about and I had to hide at the back till they left!

Is there anything I can do, and am I right in thinking those dogs are illegal? Can you phone the police or would they just laugh? Or is there someone you can report this to?

report it to the police
they will probably do nothing but it will be on record you reported it

Moomin · 26/10/2007 10:36

Ring the police and tell them. Depends on the breed whether it's illegal or not but it should be at least on a lead and muzzled.

EricL · 26/10/2007 10:38

I bet he was a knuckle dragger wasn't he?

Always seems to be the morons in our society that own these bloody dogs.

snowleopard · 26/10/2007 10:41

Well let's just say I decided against having a friendly chat with him about it

It may not be a pit-bull. There are a number of bull terrier breeds which all look very similar to each other.

Regardless of whether it was a pit-bull or not, he clearly wasn't in control of it and perhaps you should report that fact to the police.

snowleopard · 26/10/2007 10:50

Yes I'm far from a dog expert, so i can't be sure. But have phoned the police and did not get laughed at! They are going to look for him!

i beleive that all dogs no matter what breed are to be on a lead in public places. i would report it to the police. if it was a pit bull it is illegal anyway and would have to be removed. some peopel may say it is a staff but believe me there is a noticable difference, a pit bull is easy to spot.

NutterlybloodandgUts · 26/10/2007 10:53

It's illegal to breed and own pitbulls in the UK so although it could be a pitbull, the chances of it being so are slim. So it was probably a staffie, or even a labrador cross, neither of which are illegal to own or classes as dangerous dogs, but i do agree dogs should be on leads in public places

bethoo · 26/10/2007 10:58

i think that staffs are actually on the dangerous dogs act so should be on a lead and muzzled. ihave come across several pits and even a web site selling them. if you ask the owners what breed of dog it is they will fob you off like a big staffie or an american bulldog is also a classic lie!

kitsandbits · 26/10/2007 11:00

Staffs are lovely - I know 3 and they are the lovelyest, softest dogs I know

BUT regarless of that its hould be on a lead espesially if he is drunk and in no fit state to controll it!

snowleopard · 26/10/2007 11:03

I have looked at dogs on line - it was not a pure pitbull, it looked most like a mix between a pit bull and a staffie. I've no idea what it was really but it was off a lead and had that stocky with massive head/neck/jaw thing going on.

It was very like this - is that a staffie?

hard to tell

did it look at all like this or this?

pucca · 26/10/2007 11:24

staffs are NOT on the dangerous dogs list at all

bethoo · 26/10/2007 11:26

Nutter - the first one looks like a border collie cross!

snowleopard - that looked like a staff though hard to tell in the pic. am sure it is a staff though! pit bulls are bigger.

bethoo · 26/10/2007 11:27

pucca - they may not be on the dangerous dogs act but they are still classed as dangerous as they are not allowed into some european countries. i know as alot of friends in the forces have to rehome their staffs when they are posted to Germany.

pucca · 26/10/2007 11:29

Maybe so, but they are not on the dangerous dogs list here, the problem with staffs is they get into the wrong hands, like any dog it is the training and upbringing.

It annoys me that people judge staffs on the way they look. They were actually voted no 1 family dog on the KC list.

bethoo · 26/10/2007 11:30

pucca - i have nothing against staffs, my dp has one but they are a dominant dog so would not get on with my two boxers.

NutterlybloodandgUts · 26/10/2007 11:34

both the dogs I linked to are labrador cross staffs and both were said to be pitbulls.

Agree with Pucca

snowleopard · 26/10/2007 11:38

Looking at pit bulls, they seem to vary a lot and it did look like some of them... very confusing. It wasn't small - almost filled the shop doorway sitting there.

Anyway, it wasn't on a lead so I have not wasted police time (feeling bad now about shopping an innocent, lovely staffie...)

OP posts:
bethoo · 26/10/2007 11:39

Pucca - you are correct in that staffs may have been voted number one family dog but have you ever seen a staff react to another dog? they are good with kids but known for their willingness to fight other dogs. alot of men have straffs for the macho look i am afraid and encourage aggressiveness in their dogs.

pucca · 26/10/2007 11:41

I agree they are not good with other dogs, but people - they are lovely, loyal and gentle.

Snowleopard....Whatever the dog it should have been under control in a public place so you are totally right to report it.

OrmIrian · 26/10/2007 11:47

But was he riding it without lights?

bethoo · 26/10/2007 11:51

i am at the stage now that i will report any dog i see off the lead as i am sure it is against the law. it is on the camp where i work as my dogs have been accosted by dogs off the lead before and i have been reported as my dog attacked the other dog even though the other dog was off a lead and i had mine on the lead.

hercules1 · 26/10/2007 11:52

DO you mean off the lead in a park or wood or on teh street?

bethoo · 26/10/2007 11:55

hercules - i was on the army camp where i live (behind the wire)i cannot take my dogs out as if i take them to the pard there are dogs off the leash everywhere! does not bother me unless they come over and they usually do. i have two so they get a bit excited thinking they can take the world on!
