Where to get a guinea pig nowadays

I know piggies are very popular with MNetters. I've had 4 different pigs over the years and love them so much. They were wonderful pets and I'm sad that I've been without one for nearly ten years. I've decided that despite the inevitable heartbreak when they go, I just don't want to be without one and it's time for a new little friend.

The times I've been into pets at home, they rarely have more than one or two to look at and the independent sort of pet shops like where I got the ones I previously had from don't really seem to exist any more, or they don't sell animals nowadays.

I know of sites like pets for homes, but the only person I know who got a pet through a site like that ended up with a puppy which was from a puppy farm pretending to be a normal household.

Can anyone tell me the best place or way to look for guinea pigs and if it's a case of answering adverts, what to look out for.

Also, I keep them inside, rather than outdoors in hutches. If you keep indoor piggies, what sort of cage bedding do you think is best in terms of what's currently available? I used to get the stuff that was like chunks of cardboard instead of sawdust - is that still popular? I found with sawdust that they'd often get little bits stuck in their eyes.

Thank you in advance!

The best option is rescues. There are thousands of guinea pigs in rescues. The Guinea Pig Forum has a list.

Rescue is the way to go, or if not an option the rescue section as pets at home where animals seem to stay for ages because people only want to buy the cute babies.

We use fleece blankets and hay for bedding, well hay for food but they make beds with it too.

@twinsguineas thank you - I'll find out if any of the pets at home stores within travelling distance have any older pigs in need of homes available. I had planned to get a pair, but if I found an individual pig who couldn't be housed with others, then I'd take him by himself.

@user127819 that's really helpful - thank you. I will have a look and see if there are any available in the part of the country I'm in.

If you can't find a rescue in your area pm me as I know of quite a few
