urgent CAT help required

Our cat started meowing like mad (he is a noisy breed anyway), sent dh to see if he was shut out of the bedroom - no he was in the bath jumped out when dh went in.

Started meowing like mad again I went up and he was in the travel cot, I went to lift him out and he started peeing absolutely everywhere - there was loads and loads of it.

We've had him 11 months he's never done it before.

Thoughts?

Possible urine infection, in pain and desperate to go??? Any other symptoms?

Been chased off his patch doesn't want to go out anymore?? No evidence of recent fight.

He's cross with us and showing his displeasure ?

Should I reinstate a litter tray?

It sounds like he either has a fright or a urine infection. My cat got this when I changed her to iams food She started peeing everywhere and crying.the vet said it causes bladder problems in some cats.Maybe another cat has been in the house This is happening here atm as we have just moved and strange cats everywhere.

CarGirl · 21/10/2007 14:54

just thought - could it have been fireworks last night - he usually goes out a lot at night? No other changes.

tbh sounds like he was holding his pee in rather than displeased with you. Has he been licking himself a lot? That's what ours does when he has a urinary infection. Otherwise more likely to be a fright, imo.

Worth taking him to the vet anyway, urinary infections can get nasty quite quickly.

CarGirl · 21/10/2007 15:18

I hope he goes in the bath next time!!!! I've sent dh out for cat litter. DH thinks we should wait and see if he does it again, err yes but I don't want a wet bed. I will take him to the vets tomorrow if I see anything else untoward - how do they test for infections???

Something that is quite common in neutered toms is a blockage in the urinary tract - he may be struggling and straining to pass urine (which would account for the crying) but picking him up may have squeezed his bladder and forced the urine out. It can be caused by certain dry foods, not drinking enough water, or obesity. Sometimes it's caused by the cat having been neutered too early.

The vet will be able to free the blockage, but you need to take him quickly.

ib · 21/10/2007 15:29

I think they palpate to see whether the bladder is enlarged and if it is they do further tests - when we've taken our cat both times he had an obstruction and had to be left in overnight so I don't know what else they did...

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 21/10/2007 15:29

you need sparklygothkat, her big catr has problems with urinary tract and blockages.

but you cat needs to be seen ASAP as it can be very serious.

CarGirl · 21/10/2007 15:31

Hmm he had started to wee before I touched him, presumably if there is a blockage I will know about it soon (more crying) and ring the vets pronto.

At the moment he is being 100% his normal self - he's nearly 8 btw, have no idea when he was neutered though.

x post with LM, that is what our cat gets, causes secondary infections. Easy to manage in the long term though, just means he needs a special food.

LongMeg · 21/10/2007 15:31

Please ring the vet now - at least take advice from them over the phone. Urinary problems in cats can become very serious very quickly.

CarGirl · 21/10/2007 15:32

I did google and all it says about blockages rather than an infection/cystitis type thing where it would hurt to wee but no blockage.

our cat was neutered when he was about 9 months but first developed this at around 7 years old.

CarGirl · 21/10/2007 15:35

please all remind me when Merlin passes away the next time I do NOT want another pedigree

Male neuters can get a sludgy, gritty deposit in their urine, and it's this building up which causes the blockage. It may be partial, in which case he will still be able to pass some urine, but eventually if it's allowed to get worse it will stop him weeing completely.

His tummy will be distended and painful, but try not to squeeze it - you could hurt him, and even burst his bladder.

I don't think you should leave it until tomorrow, these things can honestly become very serious very quickly.

bodycolder · 21/10/2007 15:43

Fireworks terrify cats and he may have been scared to go out Poor thing

CarGirl · 21/10/2007 15:45

okay - dh did give him a good feeling around his tummy and he happily let him do it. He def has an empty bladder at the moment - it was a very big wee that he did.............

He has had some fights recently so I wonder if it is territorial plus last october & november he was still a housecat.

It sounds like he may have had a partial obstruction that thankfully has cleared. You MUST see the vet tomorrow to get him checked, and if he does the crying behaviour again overnight and does not wee call the vet out of hours and get him seen asap as a full obstruction can be life threatening.

Your vet should arrange to test a urine sample and check for infections and the possibility of crystals being produced in the urine that can be responsible for these problems. Stress too is often a factor in urine infections with cats and your vet should be able to advise you about helping your cat through the fireworks season as best you can - feliway diffusers and the like can help a bit.

Meanwhile the best you can do today is to offer your cat wet food, no dry and add extra water into the wet food. It will help to flush out things a bit. Depending upon the urine results your vet can then advise you as to diet for the future to help prevent further probs, especially if they do find crystals. Biscuits are not a long term no no, but avoid them until the vet knows more. Some of the special urinary diets do come as a biscuit form if you need these in the future for him.

CarGirl · 21/10/2007 16:02

how do I get a urine sample?????? So I can take one with me.

He is on sensitive stomach dry food as he was ill when we first got him.

he is drinking plenty as I've seen him drinking from the puddle outside and as usual has knicked mine water think we've got a couple of pouches around.

A visit to the vets with 4 children in tow tomorrow will be such fun

systemsaddict · 21/10/2007 16:37

Hi Cargirl, your vet will be able to give you some special non-absorbent litter and a syringe to squeeze up the sample from that. More fun - my cat had recurrent urinary problems and we used to have to do these on a regular basis - lovely. (Now completely under control with special diet.) Do keep an eye on him tonight - as others have said, in male cats, blockages are v. dangerous. Hope all goes well tomorrow!

CarGirl · 21/10/2007 17:06

I won't sleep through him meowing no fear! He is currently looking the picture of health lording it on his our bed napping on his back feet in air........meanwhile I just got showered with firework banger residue in our garden.............someone in the maisonette over the road setting off fireworks from their balcony in daylight, the same flat that has a police raid last week..................
