So we have a lovely little Dwarf Russian called Dougie (or Dug). We’ve had him since the start of February 2018, so he’s pushing 3 years old I imagine.
Dougie, like all older hamsters has become a bit less active these past few months and we don’t see him quite as much, unless we are cleaning out his set-up.
Anyway, I cleaned him out on Saturday and he was fine, a bit stumbly, so I bought a new tank which is all one level for the little guy. Kitted it out with sand, grass, shavings etc for texture and small wooden tunnels etc if he still wants a climb. He was exploring for hours.
I haven’t seen him much since, but today I called him and he’s come out looking scraggly, thin and his eyes were closed. He didn’t open them at all. Ran around once and back to bed. The food and water looks hardly touched.
I’ve booked him an appointment at the vets, but I know it’s hopeless at his age. I have a feeling we won’t have Dug for much longer.
Anyone else experienced this or have any tips for making his final hours/days/ maybe weeks more comfortable?
Thank you
