Is it safe to bring my puppy home at 6 weeks?

I've adopted a puppy who was going to be rehomed at 8 weeks after vaccination but now the owner wants them rehomed at 6 weeks without their jabs.

Does anyone know if it's safe to rehome them this early without having their vaccinations yet? I have no other pets but have had my sisters vaccinated dogs in the house so I don't know if this would be dangerous for a new puppy.

I've been trying to contact vets in my area to ask too but I'm not getting through. 😩

Some sources say this is fine

That sounds really, really unlikely. Assuming you are using reputable sources

You have to plough through a lot of pages on google before you find one which says 'must be over 7 weeks' amongst all those which say no younger than 8 weeks and the longer with the dam, the better (up to 12 weeks)

I've spoken to a vet about the situation and have received advice now. Thanks for your help everyone

We did BUT it was on vet recommendation as the mother developed a serious infection and wasn't responding to treatment. The vets opinion was that she wasn't going to recover unless the pups were removed (she did survive and was speyed as soon as it was safe to do so). I wouldn't consider it in any other circumstances.

No don’t do it I’ve just been reading a FB page where the puppy didn’t have any injections and now had Parvo
The free insurance hasn’t kicked in as there is a 14 day exclusion period where you can’t claim
So far they are on about £800 vet bill
And the breeder isn’t interested

toobusytothink · 29/10/2020 10:31

Do not touch this puppy with a barge pole. Very wrong ....!

Beagledbybeagle · 29/10/2020 10:43

What advice did you receive from the vet?

sm40 · 29/10/2020 19:59

My insurance refused to insure the puppy until it was 8 weeks old too.

Thisisnotnormal69 · 29/10/2020 21:57

I take it you are taking it against advice anyway.........

Wolfiefan · 29/10/2020 22:01

I hope the advice you are taking is to run far and fast from this person.
It’s not an accident. You can prevent a bitch in season becoming pregnant.
If you want a dog then adopt a rescue or do your HW and go to a decent breeder. Fuck knows what unhealth tested and poorly socialised nightmare you would be bringing home. Angry

Suzi888 · 29/10/2020 22:04

What breed is it? 6 weeks is very young, I know a husky that was given to a family at that age with disastrous consequences. They learn behaviour from dogs, not from us.
What’s the urgency? Had my lab at 11 weeks... still happy with mum and I left him there until he got on her nerves!

Mollymalone123 · 29/10/2020 22:08

Do not take before 8 weeks- they need to learn from mum and siblings about dog behaviour and good manners - if you want a well adjusted puppy- 6 weeks is way too early

Beagledbybeagle · 30/10/2020 07:05

Shes probably already got the poor puppy. What was the point of asking on here? The dog will have more puppies soon, by accident of course Angry.

LynetteScavo · 30/10/2020 07:53

What was the vets advice?

Why would you take such a tiny puppy away from its mother and litter mates?

PolarBearStrength · 30/10/2020 08:01

My cousin bought a puppy thinking it was 8 weeks old and it transpired that it clearly wasn’t. He got really unwell and ended up having to be syringe fed. Poor thing just cried all the time. It was fairly awful. (Yes, cousin is an idiot)

Alexandernevermind · 30/10/2020 08:15

Accidental pregnancy my arse, unless she is really so dim as to allow her unspayed bitch in season to run loose then, oops! If it was a genuine accident she would have taken her bitch to the vet to ensure the pregnancy did not go ahead. More likely she rubbed her hands when she saw how much pups were being sold for. My guessing is she is getting rid of the larger pups at 6 weeks to allow the bitch to get her hands on the cash quickly and allowing the bitch to concentrate on the remaining smaller pups. She needs reporting.
Our pup was from a registered breeder, we were interviewed before we were allowed to see the pups, we signed a contract based on care, we saw health test records from the bitch and sire. The pups were socialised and given exposure to car journeys, pretend nail clipping and other "experiences". They were even toilet trained.

Sitdowncupoftea · 30/10/2020 15:23

Definitely not and if you have proof report the breeder.

Marcipex · 30/10/2020 15:26

Poor puppy. Much too young and what a load of hooley. It won’t end well.

unebaguettepastropcuite · 30/10/2020 15:30

6 weeks is not OK. They need to be at least 8 weeks. If she was responsible she would also insist on them being vaccinated before she let anyone take them. I hope she is looking after the OK in meantime and your puppy won't have any health issues

Dee1975 · 30/10/2020 21:28

They should be with their mummy until 8 weeks. You can take her at 8 weeks and get her vaccinated yourself straight away. But she needs to stay with mum until 8 weeks

Honeyroar · 30/10/2020 21:31

Out of interest what did the vet think?
