Cat suspected urine infection

Lizadork · 17/10/2020 14:55

New ish ununneutered male cat (was supposed to get neutured but lockdown happened). Few days a go noticed blood in urine and has started peeing in weird places in house, normally goes outside for toilet needs. Google all points to urine infection espeically as he has been drinking a lot of water over the past couple of months. His diet was dry food, but yesterday after advice started him on wet food (little and often) adding a splash of water to it. He is now drinking actual water very little which seens to point to fact wey food providing enough but still fresh water always around. He peed on table 20 minutes ago and no blood now, a lot of pee.

Obviously does need to see a vet but in a tier 3 area right now. Is there anything else I can do to help flush this infection and ease him a bit until i get a vet appointment? He doesnt "seem" in any pain at all.

Advice?

How soon can the vet see you? Is this an adult cat or a kitten?

Lizadork · 17/10/2020 15:13

We got him in January already as an adult cat, I would say age about 2/3 years old.

I didn't realise it could be serious so ringing vets monday to see if/when i can get him seen

You need to see a vet ASAP.

My cat had these exact symptoms for 2-3 weeks and has been diagnosed as diabetic.

I’d probably try ringing your vet’s out of hours line, though adult cats are more resilient than kittens. Does he have a water fountain? You could try that to encourage more water. Do you let him out in an enclosed garden or is he roaming freely?

Lizadork · 17/10/2020 15:28

He has fresh water in a few different places in house that he will drink , previously tried running water and fountain but no interest.

Roaming free - he was getting into fights with a neighbour cat. He wanted to go out all night and be in all day, by switching that routine so out more of the day has settled the fights. Midnight - 3am they tend to do crazy so keeping in at night best for him. I know it can be stress too his behaviours causing medical issues.

I should point put he was drinking a lot of water when on dry food but when i switched to wet food yesterday he has since just taken a few licks of water. I am adding a little water to his already wet food too. Keeping an eye on him and doesnt seem in any discomfort.

He isnt skin and bones or overly chunky - nice shape for a cat. Looks and acts healthy, except for peeing etc.

See a vet asap.
A friend's guinea pig was squeaking when urinating and she spotted blood in the cage.
She rang the vet who gave an appointment that morning. An £85 xray to check it wasn't bladder stones then the vet gave ger antibiotics. This ws last Saturday and from mid-week the guineapig has been back to full health.

Lizadork · 17/10/2020 15:43

I hope it is a quick fix too x

Are you letting an unneutered adult Tom wander around where he likes or did I misread that?

PaquitaVariation · 17/10/2020 15:47

Urinary things in male cats can quickly turn life threatening, especially those who’ve had a dry food diet. He needs to see a vet before Monday.

nothinglikemyname · 17/10/2020 17:29

It can be really serious with male cats, so definitely a trip to the vet is in order but in the meantime, do you have any apple cider vinegar? We experienced this with our male a few years ago - first time went to the vet but the second time it was just before bedtime so frantically googled and found the suggestion of ACV and he was back to normal before we could get a vets appointment in the morning (just a sleepless night!)

Give a few drops in water or mix with the liquid from tuna water if they won't take it. And repeat. It breaks down the crystals.

We now give both our fur babies a drop or two mixed with water with their food daily and touch wood the issue has never returned.

Gingerkittykat · 17/10/2020 17:35

What dry food did he have? My vet told me to avoid Go Cat in particular.

Can you get hold of some Katkor or other littler tray granules to get a sample for the vet.

A urinary diet makes a huge difference, since I started using Royal Canin Vetinary food there have been no more infections, I buy it in bulk from Zooplus.

Lizadork · 17/10/2020 23:13

Managed to speak to vet receptionist, got appointment first thing monday and emergency number should anything change over weekend.

It was Go Cat dry cat food

I'll add some apple cider vinegar - thank you!

I know bad to let a male wander but never had one so long without being neutered. He was an adult outside cat when we got him so it has been difficult to keep in. The plan has always been to get him done sooner rather than later. Best for him and us.

I'll check out recommended foods.

I have organic cider vinegar, google seems to suggest almost the same thing as apple cider vinegar - last thing i want to do is poison Master Moggy on top of his current health issues Confused

He had 2 dry/2 wet with water foods yesterday.
He has had 4 wet feeds today mixing in extra water on top, liberal with water.

He is normally more whiney for more food after a feed all day long and rooting around house for water again whiney, but he is actually quite settled right now no whiney at all. Happily a sleep and content with me. Relaxed is how he seems which I haven't fully seen of him in a while when i think about it. Wet foods seem to be making a difference to how he is. Sleeping now but still alert should I poke or chin rub him Smile

Not peed on anything inappropriately since he christened the table. Got a litter box for the night to check his peeing levels, any pain/stain and if any further blood etc. So far so good.

Done a lot of googling and had no idea that prolonged dry foods diets could be such an issue.

Using litter box fine, no blood and when I opened back door he went to bottom of garden to pee on my plant pot. Will keep tomorrow's appointment but so far seems on the mend.
