My Yorkie has a bad back leg she did something last week and vet said it was a torn ligament and needs TPLO surgery plus patella surgery todstsl £5000 plus the £81 and £65 already spent
She is a tiny dog and I got the feet the vet was more interested in money than my yorkie
He didn't discuss any other ops but said if I left if she would be lame
She now seems to be using it a bit, anyone had any experience of this
It's a lot of money how do I know if she really needs this

Do you have pet insurance?

JumperTime · 09/10/2020 14:28

Is your vet a specialist? Because that seems very expensive for a general practice procedure. I would have thiut more like 2k. I would want to be certain of the diagnosis before proceeding. Your current bill seems to indicate not much in the way of investigations, xrays etc. Most dogs need to be sedated to properly diagnose a luxating patella, unless they're very relaxed! You're perfectly entitled to seek a 2nd opinion.

Hello I dint have insurance
My dog has had patella surgery 3 years ago but it’s not working now and vet says it’s stage 3 but new issue is torn ligament the vet said he could tell that was what it was but I agree no X-ray how can he be sure
I’d like a 2nd opinion but it’s so hard to find a good vet that isn’t just after money
I think £5k for petella and TPLO surgery sounds a lot and I’ve read that the plates can get infected and need more surgery to take out
She’s not in any pain and still running around it’s so hard to know if she’s just hurt the leg or has a tear
Thank you for your replies I’m finding this hard to use and could not reply in the app 😔

Cruciate surgery is expensive and conservative management (rest and anti-inflammatories for 6-8weeks) May be a reasonable alternative in dogs less than 10kg.

However it sounds as if your dog's problem may be complicated by the concurrent cruciate disease so it's impossible for anyone to advise as to the best course of action in this case. Be clear to your bet if if the surgery is unaffordable and ask about alternatives. It may be worth asking for a referral to discuss all options.

Thank you for reply she is 2.4 kilos and walking a bit better than she was I will see if rest helps I will need to get some anti inflationary medication from the vet

Does seem pricey, I’m in Scotland and I don’t think as expensive as parts of England, I had a 30kg dog have cruciate surgery for £2000.
Hopefully one of vets who post will come along.

Lulumona · 10/10/2020 09:03

The vet Orissa is £2000 for patella operation and then said needed TPLO also so that would be £5000 I'm definitely gonna wait and see how she goes for 6 weeks with rest .. but would want an X-ray before any operation

They would do xrays pre op but you can generally tell from examination that the cruciate ligament is torn. It may well be ringing round referrals for quotes. They vary hugely. Some in the Midlands quotes are often several thousand different. I'd try really strict rest and see first

Lulumona · 10/10/2020 09:56

Thank you ... she's running around I'm trying to get her to rest but she's so sprightly .. and I will definitely ring round Smile

You need to crate her, no running around.

Veterinari · 10/10/2020 12:27

She needs to be crated if you don't opt for surgery otherwise you'll end up with a permanently disabled dog.
No running or jumping, very shirt lead walks and crating and anti inflammatories for 6-8 weeks. Please discuss with your vet first.

Lulumona · 10/10/2020 13:10

Thank you I will contact vet re anti inflammatory meds and crate her no running thanks for your help much appreciated
